Biography

Otto I von Hessen, was the son of Heinrich I, Landgraf von Hessen, and his first wife Adelheid von Braunschweig, and was born about 1272.[1]

He may originally have been intended for the Church, and was proposed as a Canon of Würzburg on 1 February 1293.[1] However he succeeded as Landgraf, Herr von Oberhessen (Upper Hesse) during the life of his father in 1296, and after his death in 1308, and also succeeded his younger half-brother in Niederhessen (Lower Hesse) in 1311.[1]

Otto I died on 17 January 1328 and was buried in St Elisabeth, Marburg.[1]

He married in 1297, Adelheid von Ravensberg, daughter of Otto III, Graf von Ravensberg.

They had issue;[2]

  1. Heinrich II, succeeded his father as Landgraf von Hessen;
  2. Otto, born 1301, succeeded as Archbishop of Magdenburg;
  3. Ludwig II, succeeded as Herr von Grebenstein;
  4. Hermann I;
  5. Elisabeth, married Rudolf II von Sachsen-Wittenberg
