Biography

Volga German
Jacob Hessenbeie is a Volga German.
Jacob Hessenbeie has German Roots.

Family #34 and 34a in the 1767 Grimm census.

Family #112 in the 1775 Grimm census.

Jacob Hessenbeie was born about 1760 to Jacob Hessenbeie and Maria Elisabeth Unknown Marquardt. By 1766, his father had passed away and his mother remarried to Friedrich Marquardt. Friedrich Marquardt told immigration authorities that he was from Holstein, Germany. It's unclear if Jacob Hessenbeie was also from Holstein.

Although the family's names cannot be found in the Kulberg Reports, they were listed among the first settlers in the Colony of Grimm.

1767 Grimm Census [1]

Head of the Household Friedrich Marquart, age 33, Lutheran craftsman from Holstein
Wife Maria Elisabeth Marquart, age 30
Step-Child Jakob Hessenbeie, age 7, father was Jakob Hessenbeie, lives with Friedrich Marquart.

Jakob Hessenbeie is not listed with his mother and step-father in the 1775 Grimm census, nor is he listed under his step-father's surname, Marquardt. He would have been about 15 years old in 1775.

1775 Grimm Census [2]

Family # 112
Head of the Household Friedrich Marquardt, age 40
Wife Maria Elisabeth Marquardt, age 51.

By 1798, there were no Hessenbies in any Volga German colony.
