George was born about 1816 in Bavaria, Germany.[1][2][3]
He came to America in 1846. He arrived by ship at Baltimore MD. He worked as a Brewmaster at a Baltimore Brewery. Hie returned to Germany in approximately 1852 to marry Martha Fischer. They returned to Baltimore, and lived there until 1866. In 1866 George Hetz bought 50 acres located at Avilton MD (mid way between Frostburg and Grantsville, about 1 mile south of old US Route 40) from Richard and Susan Beall for the sum of $300, which amounted to $6.00 per acre, very high priced at the time. Land at that time was only worth $0.50 per acre. Neither George nor his wife, Martha, could ever speak or understand English. They spoke nothing but German.[4]
He passed away around 1900, and is buried in Grantsville Cemetery in Grantsville MD.[5]
