Biography

Prudence Heward was a Canadian painter associated with the Beaver Hall Group. She was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters and Contemporary Arts Society, and a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.[1]

Prudence, 1898

Heward was the sixth of the eight children of barrister Arthur Heward and his wife Sarah Jones.[2] She grew up in a large house on University Street in Montreal and spent summers at the family's summer home, Fernwood, near Brockville, Ontario.[3] She began taking art lessons at the age of twelve and soon began painting at the Art Association of Montreal.[4] Tragedy struck when Heward was sixteen. Her father died on May 16, 1912, followed shortly afterward by her sister Dorothy, who died in childbirth. Another sister, Barbara, died that fall.[5]

In 1915 Heward's brothers, Chilion and Ross, enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and were sent overseas. Heward, her mother and sister Honor volunteered with the Red Cross and stayed in England for the duration of the war.[6]

After her return to Montreal in 1919, Heward began painting again. She studied at the Art Association with William Brymner and Randolph Hewton and began exhibiting her work. In 1925 she studied in Paris at the Académie Colarossi. She won the first Willingdon Prize in 1929, and her paintings began to be selected for numerous international exhibitions.[7]

Heward died in Los Angeles in 1947 while being treated for the asthma that had plagued her throughout her life.

Thanks for putting Prudence into Wikitree! I spent quite a while trying to figure out how she might be connected to 'our' Hewards after learning of her and seeing her fabulous paintings at the Beaver Hall Group exhibition, but never quite got there. I'm thrilled to learn that she and I are third cousins once removed.
