Biography

Birth Date Guess Marriage guess per childs birth date

NOTE: Not to be confused with Priscilla Hewitt, daughter of Mary (Chesebrough) and Joseph Hewitt, who married Jesse Swan on 19 November 1758 in North Stonington, New London, Connecticut, and died in 1766. Please read and heed the copious public comments that have been posted to this profile.

This Priscilla Hewett was the spouse of Richard Henry (or Berryman) Wilbanks Jr. [1]. Her birth date and location are not known.

According to one record, Priscilla Hewett married on 14 Mar 1767 in Goochland County, Virginia to Richard Henry (or Berryman) Wilbanks, or Woolbank. [2]

Notably, the marriage of this Priscilla Hewett occurred after the other Priscilla Hewitt (the one from Connecticut), had died, in 1766.

The cited marriage date, however, fails to account for some earlier born children of this Priscilla Hewett who are listed in Family Search:

  • William Wilbanks (1751 - 1816)
  • Dorothy "Dolly" Woolbanks (1753-1838), m William Sturdie (1752-1791); Bennet Combs
  • Nancy Wilbanks (1758–)
  • Reuben Willbanks (1762–1805)
  • Henry Martin Wibanks (1764-1818), m Elizabeth Phoebe sanders; Ruthe Gentry
  • Berryman Wilbanks (1767 - 1824) [3]
  • John Wilbanks
  • William Wilbanks

Priscilla's husband Richard Henry (or Berryman) Willbanks Jr. died 17 July 1790. His Will hints at additional children.

This same Priscilla Hewett may have married second, Frederick Wilhelm Schmiidt/Smith; no known issue. The date and location of this second marriage are not evident.

Death data on this Priscilla Hewett are not certain. She may have died in 1795 (per her FamilySearch profile), or perhaps in 1804 (per an invalid online memorial site). The place of her death may have been Wilkes County, North Carolina; burial details unknown (possibly family home cemetery?).

Research Notes

The cited Find-A-Grave memorial site, in its header panel and in its caption, has significantly garbled the birth data on this Priscilla Hewett with the incorrect Priscilla Hewitt from Connecticut. The F-A-G profile, in its present condition, should not be used or consulted on the identity of this person beyond perhaps her death information, which even is uncertain. As noted throughout, and copiously described in the open comments for this profile, this Priscilla Hewett was from an entirely different geography, and was not the spouse of Jesse Swan. Apparently this same issue has been raised with, and settled by, the contributors to the relevant profiles in FamilySearch as well. Someone should likewise address and correct the F-A-G item, which perpetuates confusion.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Priscilla by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Priscilla:

The F-A-G site is entirely incorrect on the birth date and location of this -1884 profiled person. Its caption is incorrect as well. Should be changed ASAP.

Hewitt-3092 and Hewitt-1884 are not ready to be merged because: Sorry about the delay in responding. A number of distractions occured, and continuing. I am not certain these are the same person. Would like to see if there is more information, or if some of the infor actulally belongs to another profile. Might be a while, though.

Hewitt-3092 and Hewett-142 do not represent the same person because: We need to look more carefully into the identity of the Priscilla Hewitt who was born 28 May 1737 in Stonington, Connecticut. First, she is already profiled as Priscilla (Hewitt) Swan (1737-bef.1764), the seventh child of Joseph Hewitt (1696-1787) and Mary (Chesebrough) Hewitt (1702-1754). There is no evidence that Priscilla (Hewitt) Swan ever left Stonington, Connecticut, during her relatively short lifespan.

Second, there is only one spouse identified for her: Jesse Swan (not Richard Berryman Woolbanks). Since Priscilla died before 24 November 1764, the date that her widowed husband married (second) to Elizabeth Baldwin, it is unlikely that either of these profiles pertain to her with regard to a death date in 1804, and doubly unlikely that she was in North Carolina at any time.

Note also, the F-A-G memorial page cited in the Hewitt-3092 profile cites (in the caption) considerable confusion on who the wife of Mr. Woolbanks truly was. This confusion is evidenced by the posted date of her marriage to Mr. Woolbanks (Wilbanks?) in 1740, at which time the putatively profiled Priscilla would have been only 3 years old. Compounding evidence for this point of confusion is that her last name is spelled incorrectly in the Hewett-142 profile.

Probably neither of the profiles proposed for merger is correct, but certainly not for any Priscilla Hewitt who was born on the 28 May 1737 date in Stonington, Connecticut. Evidently there may have been significant garbling of at least one of these profiles over the past several months, such that some "shoehorning" assumptions have been made, leading up to the proposed merge.

Hewitt-3092 and Hewett-142 appear to represent the same person because: The two Priscilla Hewett’s are born and died on same days, married to same Richard Woolbank.

Priscilla Hewet Woolbanks/Wilbanks is NOT the daughter of Mary Chesebrough and Joseph Hewitt, as per the Mayflower Society. Our Priscilla Hewet was born later.
