Joshua Hewitt was born in April of 1832 in New Jersey. He is a son of Garrett Hewitt and Prudence. In 1850, he was an 18 year old living with Jacob Fox and his family. (They lived next door to John Ewing.)[1]
Joshua married Elizabeth Ewing on December 29, 1852 in Lower Penns Neck, Salem, New Jersey.[2] In 1860, Joshua was living with his wife and two children in Woolwich Township, Gloucester, New Jersey.[3] In 1870, he was a farmer living with his wife and children in Upper Penns Neck, Salem, New Jersey.[4] Their known children:
J Hewitt is on an 1876 Land ownership map for Upper Penns Neck, Salem county, New Jersey.[12] From 1880 to 1895, Joshua and his family lived in Upper Penns Neck, Salem. He worked as a laborer.[13][14][15] In 1900, Joshua was widowed and living in Upper Penns Neck.[16] In 1905, Joshua was 73 years and he lived in Pedricktown, Oldmans Township, Salem, New Jersey.[17]
He died after 1908 when he was mentioned in his sister's will.
The censuses say his parents were born in Delaware.
