Biography

James was born about 1794 in Cargo, Cumberland, possibly to James and Mary.^[1] (Cargo is about 1.5 miles away from Rockcliffe.)

Possibly christened daughter Mary in 1826 while living in Carlisle.^[2]

Christened son, George, in 1828, in Halton, Northumberland.^[3]

In 1841 he lived in Corbridge, Northumberland, with wife and four children.^[4]

In 1851, he lived in Byker, Newcastle, with his wife and George Hewitt [listed as stepson, but possibly son].^[5] In 1854, his son George married Margaret Robson in Newcastle.^[6]

A record in the 1861 census has a James Hewitt living with his wife Margaret in Jesmond. The age is incorrect, but their place of birth closely matches.^[7]
