Biography

Jane (Hewitt) Cribb was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Jane HEWITT.[1]

Jane was born on 12 Mar 1807 to convict parents Alexander HEWITT and Jane STARKEY in Richmond, New South Wales.

Jane was only 13 when she married convict James Cribb (23) (born on August 13, 1797 in Bristol, England; son of George Cribb and Elizabeth (Milsom) Cribb) on December 25, 1820 in East Richmond, New South Wales. [2] and 15 when their first child was born.

Their children were:

In 1822 James was assigned to Jane's mother - Jane Cribb (Hewitt nee Starkey) who was the defacto wife of John Cribb, who was probably James' brother. James died in July 1841 by which time they had 8 children.

Jane was again pregnant at the time of James' death, and a daughter Emma was born four months later. Jane remained a widow for almost forty years, although she was to have three more sons after James died, the father or fathers of whom she steadfastly refused to name. From 1874 to 1876, she held the licence for the "Travellers Arms Inn" at North Richmond and was quite a wealthy woman on her death at her home in 1880.

The two sons whose father is currently unknown are:

Jane may have had a relationship with Richard 'Middle Dick' Skuthorpe (born on October 20, 1817 in Richmond, New South Wales, Australia; son of Richard Skuthorpe snr and Eleanor (Connor) Skuthorp). Dick was married at the time and his wife Elizabeth Ezzey did not die until 1901.

Jane died on 13 May 1880.[3]She is buried with James in the Cribb family vault. [4][5]

CRIBB.-May 13, at her residence, North Richmond, Jane Cribb, widow of the late James Cribb, leaving 12 children. 83 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss, aged 73 years. [6]

On her death certificate, the three younger sons are listed as being "children of the marriage" between James and Jane although that definitely was not the case. The bulk of her estate went to her last born illegitimate son William Charles CRIBB. [7]

Research Notes

Father of William Charles Cribb

A baptism was recorded at Lower Hawkesbury, County of Cumberland for a William Charles CRIBB. It lists his birth date as 1 Feb 1849 and baptism date as 10 Sep 1849, parents Jane CRIBB and Richard SKEWTHORPE. [8] Residence is stated to be Upper Colo. It is presumed the parents were not married at the time. It is unclear whether this is Richard Skuthorp snr or his son Richard 'Middle Dick' Skuthorp jnr, both are appropriate ages, with Jane somewhere between the two. It seems reasonable to assume if Jane’s daughter Mary Ann CRIBB married Thomas Skuthorp she may have had an encounter with a relative of her son in law (she was in between the ages of the father and his brother). Both of their wives are still alive in 1848, but Richard senior was known to have moved about between Richmond and Parramatta, as he was a District Constable. He was initially attached as the father, given he was the more likely of the two. As at 2024, DNA evidence suggests the father was more likely to be 'Middle Dick'.
There is no evidence, yet, as to the father of the other two boys born after the death of James Cribb. Please contact Veronica WIlliams if you can help with this research or for more information.

Traveller's Rest

A hotel was established at North Richmond by the early 1830s. North Richmond was ideal for travellers and drovers with stock, waiting for the punt. The Pack Horse was established in the early 1830s and John Town built the Woolpack on the same site holding the license from 1830s to 1840s, the license later went to Richmond. (Town was the son of a convict and his son was the famous horse breeder, Andrew Town) The Enfield Inn was around in the 1840s and licensed to Daniel Dickens. Dickens is also recorded as having the Beehive Inn. In 1853 three licenses were held at North Richmond. The Traveller's Rest, (pictured) on Bells Line of Road, licensed to Jane Cribb in 1874 and later to John T. Town 1897-9, member of the Town family. The Exchange is listed with Alexander Matheson in 1894. Laura Phipps was the last licensee when it closed in 1913. The Riverview was established in the late 1920s early 1930s.[9]

DNA

As DNA research confirmed a connection to the Skuthorpe family, Richard senior was initially attached as the father of Jane's son William Charles CRIBB, given he was the more likely of the two (Jan 2023).
However, evidence has now emerged that suggests the younger Richard Skuthorpe is more likely the father, DNA evidence will be added to the relevant profiles soon. (Feb 2024).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jane by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jane:
