Biography

Anne was said to be born about 1651, given that she was said to be aged about 30 years old at the time of her marriage to her second husband William Bridges. [1] However, she would then have been aged only 13 or 14 at the time of her first marriage to Edward Boughton. She was probably a couple of years older (born around 1649), making her about 16 when she married Boughton as his second wife.

Her parents were Sir John Heydon, later Governor of the Somer Isles and his wife Olive Spurstow who were married in 1645. Anne was either born in London where her father was a lawyer at the Inner Temple, or at his country seat at Oxhey, Hertfordshire.

Anne had a brother John who was probably older than her, as he was of age to enter the Inner Temple in 1660.

Anne's mother Olive died when Anne was only a few years old (in 1652), and her father does not appear to have remarried.

Anne married Edward Boughton, 2nd Baronet Boughton of Lawton in Warwickshire at her parish church of St Mary Watford on 31 May 1664: [2] [3]
[1664 May] 31 - Sir Edw. Boughton & Mrs Anne Heydon

During Anne's first marriage her father was posted to Bermuda (then called the Somer Isles) to serve as Governor. He was not recalled to England until 1681.

Anne and Edward had no surviving children and Edward died in February 1680/81, leaving Anne as his executor. [4]

Sometime after 17 February 1681/2, she married William Bridges Esq. of St Andrew, Holborn , Middlesex. An abstract of the marriage licence issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury's Office stated: [1]
[1681/2] Feb 17 William Bridges of St Andrew, Holborn, Lond., Esq., Bachr, abt 23, & Dame Anne Boughton of the same, Wid., abt 30; at St Andrew's aforesaid or [blank]

William and Anne had one child, a daughter named Ann, who was to be the heiress to her grandfather Sir John Heydon. Ann Bridges was still a minor when the Act of Parliament enabling this inheritance was passed in 1699. [5]

Anne Heydon thirdly married Thomas Bayly, Gent., of Coventry, Warwickshire.

She died in late April or early May 1702, and in accordance with her wishes, was buried at the parish church of St Mary, Watford with her father: [6]
