Mrs. Evelyn Hiatt Coulson, age 95, of Cana, Virginia, passed away on January 12, 2015. She was born the fifth of six daughters on November 30, 1919 to William M. and Mimie Guynn Hiatt in the Willow Hill community of Patrick County, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Clarence H. Coulson, a veteran of World War II, a son Joe Barry Coulson, and four sisters, Virginia Hiatt, Margaret Leonard, Clara Meredith, and Ruth Bowman.

She attended Guilford College in Greensboro, NC and completed teacher preparation at Radford State Teachers' College where she later returned to earn a Bachelor's degree in education. After beginning her teaching career in a one room school house with seven grades, Mrs. Coulson went on to spend most of her 39 ½ years as a teacher at Mt. Bethel Elementary School in the Carroll County school system. Following her retirement in 1980, she was an active member of the Carroll County Retired Teachers' Association. Mrs. Coulson loved her work as an educator and maintained contact with many former students long after she retired.

Mrs. Coulson was a life-long member of the Moravian Church, attending Willow Hill Moravian Church in Ararat, VA, Grace Moravian Church in Mt. Airy, NC, and Mt. Bethel Moravian Church in Cana, VA. Her volunteer work included serving on the Board of Directors of Mount Rogers Community Services, the Community Policy and Management Team for At-Risk Youth and Their Families, the Southwestern Virginia Training Center Human Rights Committee, and the Mount Rogers Human Rights Committee.

A love of her life was politics. She served from time to time on the Carroll County Republican Party Committee and actively campaigned for party candidates. The daughter of a farmer and the wife of an orchardist, Mrs. Coulson was an avid gardener in her own right and could often be found outside, tending to her 100+ rose bushes. She was one of three Cana, VA rose gardeners featured in an article in the Mt. Airy News. Mrs. Coulson is survived by her son Philip Coulson and his wife, Karen, of Hillsville, VA and her daughter Cindy Coulson and her husband, Harley Knowles, of Athens, TN. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Alan Coulson (Melissa Ranhofer) of Piedmont, SC and Lisa Coulson of Portland, OR, as well as one great grandson, Dean Coulson. She is also survived by her twin sister, Esther Dawson. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy, NC on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM . Funeral services will be conducted at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at with Rev. Charles Fishel. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery.
