Biography

Lydia^[1] was born in 1823. She is the daughter of Isaac Hiatt and Hannah Sulgrove.

She married Benjamin Griffis and is found with him in Wayne County, Indiana in the 1850 US Census ^[2], along with their daughter Katura (Catura, Katy?). By 1860, three more children, William, Mary, and Sarah were born to the marriage and they had moved to Washington Twp. in Darke Co., Ohio ^[3], where he was listed as a farmer.

Sometime after the 1860 enumeration, Lydia either died or they divorced, since there is an Ohio marriage record of Benjamin Griffith marrying a Miss Caroline Heckler on 1 Nov 1862 in Darke Co., Ohio. ^[4]

Research Notes

It is unclear when Lydia died. Her husband Benjamin is listed in the 1870 & 1880 censuses as a tradesman in the home of other families, but seems to have been estranged or divorced from his second wife, Caroline Heckler. Either Lydia died and her daughters were wed off, or Lydia was left in charge of the household. An extensive search has not found her near her 1860 home in Indiana, but there is an intriguing entry in the 1870 Census in Ohio^[5] that includes Lydia, Katy, and Mary E that are all about the right ages. The birth locations for Katy and Mary is Ohio, rather than Indiana, which is understandable, but Lydia is listed as being born in Massachusetts, rather than Indiana, which is difficult to understand. This same Lydia is found with Katy and Mary in the same city in 1860 (making it VERY unlikely they are Benjamin's wife and family) and she is still in Columbus in 1880, although without Katy or Mary.
