Biography

Baptism

John Hiatt was baptized on 14 Sep 1800 in the Church of England parish church Holy Trinity, Nailsea, Somerset, England. It is conjectured that he was born shortly before his baptism. His parents are recorded as "Wm & Hannah Hiatt"[1]. John was the first of eight children born to William and Hannah Hyatt (Hiatt) In Nailsea, Somerset between 1800 and 1823. His parents are conjectured to have lived there throughout their lives. The men in his family were coal miners and later quarry workers.

Marriage

John married Mary Hobbs in 1823 in the Church of England parish church of St Mary, Redcliffe, Bristol on 24 May 1823[2]. They are described as both "of this Parish" and respectively as bachelor and spinster. The witnesses were Hannah Hobbs and James Gnoyer(?). Bristol St Mary Redcliffe is a chapelry of Bedminster Ancient Parish in Somerset[3].

Children

John and Mary had thirteen children between 1823 and 1843, all born in Nailsea:

  1. Joseph Hyatt, born 24 Oct 1823, baptized 4 Jun 1837[4]
  2. Will Hyatt, born 18 Nov 1824, baptized 26 Mar 1837[5]
  3. John Hyatt, born 13 Sep 1826, baptized 26 Mar 1837[6]
  4. Aaron Hyatt, born 22 Dec 1827, baptized 4 Jun 1837[7]
  5. Jacob Hyatt, born 8 Mar 1829, baptized 26 Mar 1837[8]
  6. Mary Ann Hyatt, born about 1830, baptized 17 Feb 1833[9]
  7. Eliza Hyatt, born about 1832, baptized 17 Feb 1833[10]
  8. Mercy Hyatt, born 22 Jun 1835, baptized 26 Mar 1837[11]
  9. Jabis Hyatt, born 16 Aug 1836, baptized 26 Mar 1837[12]
  10. Emily, born 1838[13]
  11. Abigail, born 1839[14]
  12. Thomas, born 1841[15]
  13. Hannah (later Anna), born 1843[16]

Residences and households

In 1841 the family was living in Little Nailsea (a cluster of houses 1 km east of H]the parish church) with John and Mary and eleven of their children[17]

By 1851 the family had now relocated to Union Street, Nailsea. John and Mary were living with six of their children[18]. The older children had at that time moved out of the family home.

The family relocated to another dwelling, and in 1861 were living in Hobbs Cottages. John and Mary had two of their children with them: Thomas (19 years) and Hannah (17 years) and three of their extended family [19]

On a number of Census returns his occupation is recorded as quarry labourer.[20][21].

Death and burial

John's death was registered in Bedminster, Bristol in September 1866[22], his age was recorded as 66 years.

Research Notes

John and Mary's children up to 1837 were baptized in Holy Trinity Nailsea parish in "batches" immediately before the introduction of government regulated registrations of births, implemented on 1 Jul 1837. As an example of this, on 26 Mar 1837 four of the children: John (born 1826), Jacob (1829), Jabis (1836) and Mercy (1835) were all baptized together and recorded as a block of four entries on the Register. It is uncertain whether the children were unbaptized up to that point, or baptized in a non-conformist setting. The latter may be improbable as the Church of England may not have been amenable to re-baptism at that time.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
