Biography

What we currently know of William is little and most of what we know comes from William Perry Johnson's publication, "Hiatt-Hiett Genealogy and Family History". In this publication (which is available for free on FamilySearch.org) on page 126 is a brief, uncertain, unsourced guess of William's life and marriages. According to Johnson's research, William HIATT was born on 28 Nov 1762 in Rowan (now Guilford) County, North Carolina. His first wife's name is believed to be Elizabeth and she probably died before 1818 - was this Elizabeth Sulgrove? The information on Elizabeth Sulgrove does not seem to connect her to this particular William Hiatt. Johnson gives William's second wife to be Sarah Dunigan. They are believed to have been married in 1817. William moved to Henry County, Indiana in about 1829 where he died presumably post 1830 (or after 29 Jul 1834).

Children of William Hiatt and Elizabeth are:

  1. Charles Hiatt, b. 18 Mar 1794[1]
  2. Jesse Hiatt, b. circa 1796, Surry County, NC, m. 1818, Julia Taylor, d. 1835, Surry County, NC.
  3. William Hiatt
  4. Rebecca Hiatt, b. 23 Dec 1810[2]
  5. Hiram Hiatt

Children of William Hiatt and Sarah Dunigan are:

  1. Thomas Hiatt

We are presuming this William to be the son of William & Susannah Hodgson Hiatt. McCraw-22 20:06, 11 November 2014 (EST)

We are presuming this William to be the father of Jesse Hiatt, who married Julia Taylor. McCraw-22 20:06, 11 November 2014 (EST)

Johnson's publication promotes Jesse Hiatt as the "father" of many Latter Day Saints in Utah, but Jesse Hiatt is buried in the Westfield Friends Cemetery next to his wife, Julia. McCraw-22 20:06, 11 November 2014 (EST)

We need more documentation or DNA evidence to more definitely link this William to William, Sr. and to Jesse & Julia Taylor Hiatt. McCraw-22 20:06, 11 November 2014 (EST)

Three William Hiatts appear in the Westfield Meeting birth/death records:

William, Sr., husband of Susannah Hodgson
William, Jr., son of William & Susannah, born 11-28-1762
William, son of Jesse & Julia Taylor Hiatt, born 7-1-1821

Two William Hiatts appear in the New Garden Meeting birth/death records:

William, Sr., husband of Susannah Hodgson
William, Jr., son of William & Susannah born 11-28-1762
William, husband of Charity, died 7-12-1814

One William Hiatt appears in the Deep River birth/death records:

William, son of John & Pheby, born 11-26-1774

Hiatt-36 and Hiatt-803 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same birth date and residence and lots of other shared data.
