Biography

Research Notes

  1. Confusion exists concerning Zachariah's birth date. Johnson gives it as 1 Dec 1779 where Bilby gives it as 21 Jan 1779. To resolve this conflict I turned to the men's minutes of New Garden Monthly Meeting. There his birth date is given as 1 Dec 1779 which I have adopted. This also agrees with birth date given on the Find-A-Grave website.
  2. His parents, Joseph HIATT and Keziah MILLS were listed in the monthly minutes of Deep River MM, Guilford County, North Carolina as having been married on 25 March 1779.

"Zachariah Hiatt moved to Grayson County, Virginia, probably about the time same time as his father.

He married September 17, 1803 to Anne Coffin (ancestry to follow later). To them were born nine children:

(I) Moses born May 6, 1804 married 1821 to Elvina Edwards.

(II) Armilla born August 5, 1805 married 1827 to George Knight.

(III) Mary born 1806 married first, June 19, 1842 to Thomas W. Coats. (This was his second marriage, having married first Sarah Hiatt, daughter of Jonathan). Mary married second November 8, 1875 to William Pickett.

(IV) Hepsa born April 13, 1808 married in November of 1827 to John Cox, son of Benjamin and Ann Cox.

(V) Sarah was born March 26, 1810 married 1836 to Jesse Bond.

(VI) Joseph born December 8, 1811 married first in 1836 to Dinah Bond, he married again to Mary (Bond Cook, widow of John Cook) and perhaps had a third wife.

(VII) Keziah born July 22, 1813 ,married to Sylvanus Knight in 1830. The Knights, George and Sylvanus and their families moved to Iowa sometime prior to 1840.

(VIII) Libni born December 2, 1815 died young.

(IX) Martha born August 23, 1818 married 1837 Jonathan Swallow."

Charlie Jaffé...I just love how the Quakers used all the biblical names throughout their families.
