Biography

John Hibbard was born in Franklin County, Virginia, about 1779.

From his enlistment record for the War of 1812[1], we can glean some important information. He was born in Franklin County, Virginia, around 1779. He was 6' 3/4" in height, with light hair and "fair" skin. He listed his occupation as "laborer". He enlisted, in 1813, for a period of five years, as a private, was promoted to corporal in January, 1815, and then procured a substitute and was discharged in May 1815. He served in the 43rd Regiment, in Captain Robert Love's company.

He married Julia Stiles (see pension record) and fathered several children. (See the names of heirs in the court record quoted below.)

He died in 1821in Haywood County, North Carolina. The area where he died may have been in the western portion which in 1828 became the new Macon County. (See "Macon County" in the image of a typed pension index record created later.) It should be noted that in the Federal Census of Haywood County 1820, that his wife "Jaley" is listed as Head of Household along with eight children. There is no marking for a male of his age. Could he possibly have died before 1820 rather than in 1821?

After his death there was testimony regarding him in Macon County Court in 1838:

Minutes of Wednesday 13 June 1838, State of North Carolina, Macon County / June Session 1838. Personally came Charles Stiles in open Court and being duly sworn, sayeth that he was well acquainted with John Hibberts in his lifetime and is certain that the said Hibberts did die in the County of Haywood, and that, Elijah Hibberts, Nancy Beasly, Charles Hibberts, Sarah Childers, May Sitton, Jane Beasly, Cornelius Hibbert & William Hibbert were always recognized by him the said John Hibbert, as his lawful heirs, and that Jaily Hibberts, who is yet alive, was his lawful and wedded wife. / Sworn to the 13 day of June 1838 / Charles Stiles before John Hall Clk [2]
