Biography

During his time in North Dakota, Peter was active in civic affairs. He served as supervisor for Equality Township and as a road overseer. [1] He also served as an election judge. [2]

1895 Minnesota State Census, 25-year-old Peter Hickel enumerated with Ann (22), Tilly (6) Louisa (2) in the household of "Mathas Kontz" in Mulligan Township, Brown County, Minnesota. On 31 August 1916, the Williston Graphic announced that: "A marriage license has been issued to Peter Hickel and Miss [Mrs] Rose Eckert, both of Ray. "[4] In 1916, Rose married Peter Hickel in North Dakota. Peter was a widower who had resided in Mulligan Township and had been a neighbor of the Schmitt family for a time before moving to North Dakota. The wedding was commemorated with the following item in The Fargo Forum and Daily Republican: "On last Tuesday morning at about 9 o'clock, at Ray, the marriage of Peter Hickel and Mrs. Rosy Schmidt [Eckert nee Schmitt] was solemnized at the Catholic church in that city, with Rev. Father Yzermans officiating. The newly married couple have moved to their farm a short distance from Ray and started housekeeping. Peter Hickel is one of the earliest settlers near Ray, having farmed there for a number of years, and the bride, formerly of Comfrey, Minnesota, arrived in Ray last July and has been visiting in the vicinity since that time. To help celebrate the wedding, a large number of friends and neighbors were entertained at the Hickel farm on Tuesday afternoon and evening. "[5]
