Biography

He was born in Castleisland, Kerry, Ireland in 1858. He first emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, in 1879.^[1] He was one of the early settlers of the Opunake district. He was a member of the Armed Constabulary stationed in Opunake and also an athlete of renown. He was regarded as an outstanding runner and was also fullback in the first football team to be formed in Opunake.^[2] He then went on to NSW, Australia between 1881 and 1888.

He died on August 18, 1934 at St Vincent's private hospital (late R.A.S. and A.J.C.). Husband of Annie and father of Mary (Mrs William Mingay), John James, Vera (Mrs N. Thackeray), Sidney, Dave, Clarence and Ilma, aged 72 years.^[3]
