James was born in 1893 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the 6th of 9 children and the 3rd of 4 sons born to Jeremiah Hickey and Emma Grimes. In 1900, the family lived at 1101 S Kinnickinnic Ave and his father Jeremiah was employed as a roller in a mill. In the 1910 Census they were still living at the same house, but James' mother Emma had passed away on XXXX. His widower father Jeremiah was still a roller in a steel mill.
James attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, majoring in Agriculture. He graduated in 1917 after presenting a thesis on seed corn. He was a member of Alpha Tao Omega (ATO) along with his younger brother Clement (class of 1920). The chapter house was located at 225 Lake Lawn Place, between the Psi Upsilon and Alpha Delta Phi on Lake Mendota. There is no longer an active ATO chapter at Wisconsin, but the building still exists but appears to be a co-op called Ambrosia
On 1 Oct 1918 James married Anna Rose Boutin at the St. Mary's Pro Cathedral, located at the corner of present day 15th and Davis St in Portland, OR. The wedding was officiated by Rt. Rev. Alexander Christie, Archbishop of the Diocese of Portland and attended by family and a few intimate friends. After the wedding the newlyweds lived in Yaquina, Oregon where James was stationed with the Spruce Division of the Army Signal Corps.
He passed away in 1972 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, OR. After the Requiem mass on Thursday, 28 Dec 1972, James was laid to rest at Mt Calvary Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.
