Biography

Catherine Green Hickling was born in 1767 in Boston. She died in 17 May 1852 in Boston aged 84.[1]Catherine married The Honorable William Prescott of Salem by Rev. Samuel Parker, 18 December 1793 in Boston.[2]William Prescott was born 19 August 1762 in Pepperell, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He died 8 December 1844 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts. There is some controversy over where William was buried. Find a Grave says he is in Mount Auburn Cemetery.[3]The Prescott Memorial says he was buried in the family crypt under St. Paul's Church in Boston.[4] William was the son of Colonel William Prescott of Bunker Hill fame.

William Prescott taught for some time at Beverly to enable him to prosecute his legal studies, and it was in Beverly he began the practice of law. He soon rose to distinction in the profession in which his talents, integrity, and his industry gained him a high rank. In 1828, he retired from the bar, after more than forty years of service.[5]

The marriage of Catherine to William proved to be a happy union, full of blessing to them and their house during the fifty-one years of its continuance. They had seven children, all born between 1795 and 1806, but four of them died under one year. Prescott had no relish for political distinction, and when he consented to any situation it was to gratify his numerous friends. From 1798 he represented Salem four years in the general court, and senator for Essex Co. in 1805, but declined a re-election. He removed to Boston in 1808, and represented that town several years in the general court. He was twice invited to a seat on the bench of the supreme court: once while in Salem in 1806, and once when in Boston in 1813; each of which he declined. He was of the executive council for several years under Gov. C. Gore and Gov. Strong. In 1818 he was appointed a judge of the court of common pleas for the city of Boston, which he resigned in about a year. In 1820 he was elected as one of the delegates from Boston to the convention for revising and amending the Constitution of Massachusetts.

In 1824 Harvard College conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Laws. In 1843, 28th of October, while at Pepperell, he had a slight attack of paralysis, but from which he recovered But about the last of November 1844, he felt more unwell, and on Sunday, December 8, he had another attack and died without a struggle, aged 82 years 3 months and 19 days.[6]

In 1850, Catherine S. Prescott (probably misnamed by the transcriber) Aged 83, born 1767 in Massachusetts, was living in Boston, ward 6, Suffolk, Massachusetts. She was female, and the family no. was 18. Living with her was: Wm H Prescott age 53 as head of household, Susan Prescott age 47 his wife, Wm G Prescott age 24 his son, Wm W Prescott age 21 his son, Elizabeth Prescott age 22 his daughter, Catherine S. Prescott age 83 his mother, Margaret Homer 50 Servant, Jerome Blanchard age 28 Servant, Delia Spear age 25 Servant, and Mary Smith age 22 Servant.[7]
