The fourth child of Joshua Hickman and Josinah Van Meter. He was a sergeant in the War of 1812. In 1832 he moved to Union Co, Indiana, about the time of the great family migration to Henry Co, Indiana. In August of 1833 he moved to La Porte Co, establishing his home in Section 17 of Kankakee Township, near the present village of Rolling Prairie. By trade he was a blacksmith. But in his middle and later years he devoted his entire energies to farming. He married Rachel Coplin in 1821. They had 11 children. Children: Benjamin, Joshua, William, Frederick, Joseph, Josinah, Sophronia, Edgar, Mary, Jacob and Charles. She passed away in 1869.
