Notes for Joseph B. Hickman: The following text is excerpted from Hester M. and Richard Smith's publication on William Pullen.
He and Martha Pullen were married in Wilkes County, Georgia but apparently lived continuously in Pendleton District, South Carolina until removing in 1818 to Jones Valley (now Jefferson County, Alabama). He apparently decided to emigrate after he bought land in Pendleton in July that he sold in November of 1818. Their son, Pleasant Hickman, described the journey in a note written about 1892. Joseph saw service in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Sister's Ferry on the Savannah River. In 1818, in a company led by John Brown, the Hickmans moved to Jones Valley in the Black Warrior Territory of Alabama. The group camped at what became known as Brown's Spring until the Hunstville land sales in 1819 when Joseph built a home in what is now known as the Lakeview-Avondale section of Birmingham. He also owned a hotel in the county seat of Elyton and is shown there in the 1850 census, which shows his son-in-law, Elijah F. Sandifer as the innkeeper. Later he lived in Pickens county, Alabama, where he died.
Harriet Eliza Hickman was born 30 Jul 1829 in Jefferson County, Al., and 19 Dec 1847 in Jefferson County, Al., married Elijah Fleming Sandifer who was born 1829 in South Carolina.
