James died on 11 November 1851 in Bath County, United States, aged 78. He was buried in Warm Springs Cemetery, in Bath County.[4]
Research Notes
James left a will referenced in the final settlement of his estate that gave all his land and personal property to his widow for her lifetime, then the land was to be sold after her decease and the proceeds divided between daughters Sarah, Mahala, Catherine and Mary and grandson James W. Vance. All his personal property was also to be sold, but the will did not make any disposition for the proceeds, so it was distributed equally to his heirs at law, which were his surviving eight children and the six children of his daughter Nancy Hickman Vance.[3]
Other possible relatives:
A James E. Hickman, b. about 1805 appears in 1840 census in Bath County; he appears to be married with children. However, neither he nor his heirs were mentioned in James' estate settlement, so James E. is probably not a son.
