Biography

Sarah was born 23 Feb 1835 in Melton, Randolph, Missouri to William Adams Hickman and Bernetta Burkhardt^[1] . Sarah's family moved to Hancock County Illinois as seen in the "1839 to 1846 Illinois, Hancock, County , Nauvoo Community Project"^[2]. In 1849 she immigrated overland to Deseret United States with Cornwall Company ^[3]. She and her family settled in Deseret or "Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States" The 1850 United States Census for the Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States show Sarah's siblings as follows. ^[4]

Sarah married Samuel Monroe Butcher on date unknow, estimated between 1851 and 1853 based on Sarah's age in 1850 census and the age of first born son William Monroe in 1860 Census. Sarah and Samuel had the following children. ^{[5][6] [7]}

Fun fact for Sarah, it is noted she purchased 160 acres of land for $10.00 in 1884^[8] and another 160 acres of land for $14.00 in 1901.^[9] In 1910, she is living with her daughter Pauline Mathews and her children. ^[10]She passed away 20 Feb 1914 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, ^[11][12]and was buried 22 Feb 1944 in Almo, Nevada, United States. ^[1][12]

Research Notes

The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints - Pioneer Database 1847–1868 Notes indicate the following " Sarah Catherine Hickman Birth date confirmed by West Jordan Ward records at the time of a rebaptism on 14 March 1857. At that time, she was using the married name of "Butcher." Her death certificate and the inscription on her gravestone show her surname as "Butcher." Note that FamilySearch shows her birth date as 23 February 1834. Her death certificate shows it as 23 February 1832, and the inscription on her gravestone gives her date of birth as 23 February 1835.
