Notices

The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 - 1950), Saturday 28 November 1896. [11] The new Baptist Church - a very neat and imposing building on the corner of Hatton and Parkes-street - was opened on Sunday. Services throughout the day were well attended and the sermons delivered by Pastors Hicks, Bedell and Spurway were most instructive. The building in all cost £254, of which all has been paid but £94 12s 6d, which speaks well for the Baptists of Ryde. Mr. Edward Gallard gave the land for the new Baptist Church - a generous and magnificent gift.

The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 - 1919), Wednesday 4 March 1903. [13] Baptist Pastor for Ryde District. Death of an Old Identity. Mr. James Hicks, one of the oldest residents of the district, passed away on Thursday night last at the residence of his son, Mr. Jonathan Hicks, of North Ryde. He had for some time been residing at Burwood, but during the past few weeks had been staying with his son. He had a paralytic stroke at his residence in Burwood about four weeks ago, and, having had several similar seizures previously, he never recovered from it. The change came on Wednesday last, and the old gentleman, as previously stated, passed away on Thursday evening, after much suffering. Had he lived until Friday, he would have been just 81 years of age. The deceased was a native of England, having been born in the county of Devonshire in the year 1822, so that he had seen many changes in his lifetime. He leaves seven sons and two daughters, and between 40 and 50 grand children, all residents of the district. The sons are Jabez Hicks, William Hicks, Eleazar (Harry) Hicks, Jonathan Hicks, Barzillai Hicks, James Hicks and Joseph Hicks, and the daughters, Mrs. George Gallard and Mrs. Silas Gallard. The funeral, which moved from the residence of Mr. Jonathan Hicks, on Saturday afternoon at half-past 3 o'clock, was very largely attended, relatives and friends from all parts of the district joining in the mournful procession. The remains were interred in the Baptist Cemetery, Lane Cove-road, the Rev. Mr. Beddell, assisted by Mr. Spurway, officiating at the grave. The hymn, "A day's march nearer home," was softly and feelingly sung by those assembled at the open grave, led by the minister. The Rev. Mr. Beddell delivered a most touching address, in the course of which he referred to the honorable character of the deceased. Among other floral tributes were those sent by Mrs. H. Heard and family, A. L. Cohen, E. Hicks and family, and others. An in memoriam service will be conducted at the Baptist Chapel on Sunday next by Mr. Spurway.
