Robert Hicks, of Greensville County, Virginia, left a will dated 1 March 1796 and proved in June 1798 Greensville County Court by witnesses James Parham and Eliza Parham, who also witnessed the will. His wife Mary was named one of the executors and when the will was proved, Martha Greenway and John Blunt Turner were Mary Hicks's securities for the bond. The other executors were "my friends" Winfield Mason and James Parham. Third witness to the will was Dolly Peterson.[1]
His daughter Mary may have married John Watson, or Robert may have just entrusted her care to him, calling him "my trusty friend John Watson" and leaving to John Watkins "during his natural life my plantation named New market in South Carolina with fifty Acres of Land on Raeford Creek bought of Frederick Spagner... for the use & benefit and support of himself my daughter Mary the daughter of my first wife Angelina Hicks deceased, and Children if there should be any surviving begotten of her Body. If John Watson should decease before my daughter Mary I leave the Estate in the hands of Hicks Chappell and John Hopkins as Trustees for my Daughter Mary and Children if there be any."[1]
Slaves: Robert's will named "nine Negroes", whom he left to John Watson: "Jack, Pamela, Cyrus, Toney, Jenny, Charlotte, Robin, Sizey and Delsey".[1]
Research Notes
Identifying others named in the will, in addition to Mary's mother, Martha Greenway:[1]
James Parham is either Elizabeth's husband or her son, but her profile does not have either attached. Whether husband or son, WikiTree has only one profile that might possibly be him, of age to be her son: James Parham (aft.1772-aft.1795). No information about this family is provided other than the reference to the father's will (I'm not an Ancestry member, so the reference - and the profiles created based on it, which do not include a wife as of 21 March 2021- is all I have). William Parham of Nottoway County wrote his will in 1794, and it was proved (in Nottoway County) on 7 December 1797.[2]
John Blount Turner (abt.1763-abt.1837), born in Brunswick County, married in North Carolina, died in Mississippi. His profile has a sister Mary attached, who is attached as wife of John James Wall of Greensville, Virginia. Citation to John Wall's 1796 will, proved in Greensville Court January 1797.[3]
A Col. John Wall is named in the will of Richard Ransom, who married Frances Hicks (both Richard and Frances are named in the will of her father, Robert Hicks). Frances's half-brother Robert married Elizabeth Irvin (whose sister Mary was probably wife of Col. John Wall, whose will was proved 1761 - see their profiles for more). The mother of Elizabeth and Mary Irvin was Elizabeth Peterson. Also, Richard's widow Frances is said to have married (2) Batt Peterson.
DAR record for John Turner (father of Mary Wall and John Blount Turner) shows son Sugars married to Rebecca Delony.[4]Benjamin Hicks, son of James who died 1761 (wife Fathy named in will), married a Delony (Lucy). So did Daniel Hicks (married Fanny). Lucy & Fanny were daughters of Henry Delony. Henry's DAR record shows a son Henry who married an Ann Turner,[5] daughter of James Turner (in WikiTree, James born c1748/Ann born 1766). Henry Delony & Anne Turner's daughter Rebecca married Sugars Turner.[6]
John Watson no likely WikITree profile as of 23 March 2021
Hicks Chappell (1757-1836), son of Elizabeth (Hicks) Chappell, whose profile says she is named daughter in the 1738/9 will of Robert Hicks (1738/9 will of Robert names daughter "Elizabeth Hicks".[7] His profile does not have a profile for Elizabeth attached, as it is not clear that the Elizabeth Hicks named in Robert's will married a Chappell.
John Hopkins no likely WikITree profile as of 23 March 2021
