Ira Harris Hicks was born on 3 Sep 1821 in McKees Mills, Wellington, Kent, New Brunswick, Canada, son of Israel Hicks (~1785 - 1879) and Abigail Ivy (Carlisle) Hicks (~1796 - ~1875).

Ira married Matilda Abrams (born in Leicester, England on 4 Jan 1826; died in McKees Mills on 19 Jan 1905), daughter of John E. Abrams and Jane Stableford, on 25 Nov 1844 in Buctouche, Kent. Their children were:
- Abigail (Hicks) MacKay (1845 - 1908)
- Abram John Hicks (1852 - 1928)
- Ephraim Harris Hicks (1857 - 1921)
- James Ira Hicks (1859 - 1938).
Ira died on 11 Sep 1908 in McKees Mills aged 87. He is buried in Gladeside Cemetery, Gladeside, New Brunswick.
