Biography

Emma had four older brothers, John 1843, Thomas 1844 and James 1847, one older sister, Eliza 1849 and one younger brother, Winfield Scott 1860. She was the daughter of Edmund Hicks (1816-1894) of England and Jane Walker (1822-1861) of Coshocton county, Ohio.

1860 was a dramatic year for the Hicks family, as revealed in the 1860 US Census, dated 15 June. It shows that Winfield was 5 months old, born in mid-January, but the mother and a sister, Eliza, were not present.[1] Jane and Eliza appear to have died before this time. Family history claims that Jane died as a result of child-birth, which would have been with the birth of Winfield. It is easy to imagine the turmoil that the household was thrown into with a missing mother and a new baby. The only female left in the house was five-year-old Emma, so the father and the boys; John 19, Thomas 17, James 12 and Adam 7, had to take shifts as best they could. Their Aunt Elizabeth had moved to California by that time, but their Aunt Mary and Grandmother Nancy Ann were nearby and probably frequently (early, late and often) helped with the baby. His father, Edmund, re-married just about the time of Winfield's first birthday, on 16 January 1861 to Margaret Huston (1827-1901). She was recently widowed by her husband, Samuel Croy, and had three children, about the ages of James, Eliza and Adam. 1861 certainly started out with another round of adjustments for the re-configured family to manage, but at least they had a mother again.

"At the age of eleven she went to live with an old couple and at that time received her first lessons in nursing, the old lady being crippled with rheumatism. Three years after taking up her home with these people, the old lady died."[2]

Emma took a little trip with her grandma Nancy Ann way out to California to see her Aunt Elizabeth. A family biography may be understood to say that her Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Benjamin Hawkins went to Ohio and brought Emma and Nancy Ann with them back to California. It is unknown what prompted this journey, possibly her step-mother making life at home difficult? Or Emma wanted an adventure on her own or maybe Nancy Ann missed her daughter and needed a travel companion? Another possibility could have been that Elizabeth missed her mother and was concerned whether her siblings were providing well enough for her? Apparently they didn't buy round trip train tickets, because they remained in California. They were both in the home of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hawkins in 1870 at Shasta county, CA.[3] Nancy Ann was adored by her many offspring and they eagerly went to visit her. The California descendants unfortunately didn't have long to enjoy her company because Grandmother Nancy Ann died in 1872.

She was married to Isaac Wheeler Phillips on 3 July 1871 at Montgomery Creek in Shasta county.[4] They lived on the Cuykendall Ranch in Oak Run Valley for about five years and then moved to the Brown ranch on North Cow Creek, both in Shasta county.[5]

"Mrs. Phillips has had five children: Edmund James 1872, who is engaged in manufacturing lumber on North Cow Creek, and who is married and has nine children; Linnie Lenota Strayer 1874 of Chico has four children; Daniel Winfield 1877, who is a partner in the lumber business with his brother E. J., and who has six children; Frank Albert 1879, who is in the employ of the Dubroy Motor Company in Chico, and who is the father of four children; Archibald Chesleigh 1886, who graduated from the Chico High School and the State Normal and taught four years, who is now employed in the Chico post office, and who has two children. Archibald has considerable literary talent and has a book of poems being printed in Baltimore."[2]

In 1900, her four sons were at home; Edward [Edmond], Daniel, Frank and Archie, in Round Mountain township of Shasta county, California.[6]

Isaac died in 1897. "After the death of her husband, Mrs. Phillips remained on the ranch, and managed the business for some time. Three of her sons built a sawmill on North Cow Creek, operated by water power, and they have conducted it with success ever since. When she sold the ranch and moved into Chico Vecino, in 1903, where she bought a lot, her sons made the lumber in their mill and sent it to Chico, two of them coming down and putting up her house. The home is located at the corner of Second Avenue and Magnolia Street."[2]

Ema lived in Novato with her son Daniel and his six children in 1920[7] and in O'Neal with her daughter, Linnie Strayer, in 1930.[8] She died on 28 January 1938. Her burial was in Redding.[9] Her burial memorial has a lengthy biography of her and her family from "History of Butte County, California," by George C. Mansfield 1918.

"History of Butte County, California," by George C. Mansfield, 1918. Pages 891-893 were transcribed on Emma's burial memorial. She states that she was one of eight children born to Edmund Hicks and Jane Walker, six boys and two girls. Only seven have been found by using census records. One boy is missing. There is a four year gap between Eliza 1849 and Adam 1853.
