Biography

Willard was born about 1874 in Ohio. His burial memorial says 1876. He was the second son of James Walker Hicks (1847-1928) and Sarah Ann Croy (1847-1888), who were married on 4 February 1871 in Coshocton county, Ohio. Although no proving source for his birth can be found, he was probably born in Coshocton county, Ohio. He was the second oldest of four children; Harry 1871, Linda 1875 and Ada Maud 1885.

Residence in 1880: Warsaw, Coshocton, Ohio.[1] He and his two older siblings; Harry and Linda were at home in Warsaw in 1880. His mother, Sarah, died in 1888.

Willard married Emma E Smith in 1900 in Ohio county, West Virginia.[2]

Residence in 1910: Pultney, Belmont, Ohio.[3] That record states that Willard was a house building contractor, they had been married ten years and Emma had not had any children.

He registered for the draft at Martins Ferry in Belmont county, Ohio, stating that he was born on 1 June 1876. He was a carpenter, living and working in Lansing. His physical description was tall, slender with blue eyes and brown hair.[4]

Willard died on 18 November 1938 in Mt. Olivet of Marshall county in West Virginia.[5] His burial was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.[6]
