Biography

He arrived in Western Australia on 23/9/1843 at Leschenault on the "Armata". He was a draper and was initially employed by George Shenton.

MARRIAGE. On the 19th instant, MR. J. HICKS to ELIZA-BETH SUSANNA, third daughter of the late Mr. W. LEEDER.[1]

The funeral of Mr. Jeremiah Hicks, an old and well known colonist, took place yesterday and was numerously attended. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Helmich, Glyde, B. Smith and O'Callaghan. Mr. Hicks had been in bad health for the past five years, and for fully twelve months previous to his death which occurred at his residence, in Queen Street, on Wednesday night had been paralysed and quite helpless. Mr. Hicks arrived at Fremantle from England in the year 1844, by she ship Armata. He married a daughter of the late Mr. W. H. Leeder, and had a large family, all of whom are now grown up and settled in various parts of the colony.[2]

He died age 73 at his home in Queen St Fremantle. Some newspaper articles put his date of death as 31/12/1890.

He is buried in East Perth Cemetery which has his date of death as 30/12/1890.[3]

This man? applied for 40 acres at"Selaring Brook"on Toodyay Rd. 1854 & employed 2 TIL men 1853 & 1856. Customs officer (1857-1884 Alm). Frem., 9torekeeper (1880 Alm) & house prop. (1873-1889 Alm). Tidewaiter at Fremantle & owner of Town Lot in 1853.
