Biography
Jefferson was Cherokee.
Jefferson Hicks was born January 4, 1826 to George Hicks and Lucy Fields, both Cherokee. On April 9, 1826 the baptism of Jefferson Hicks, born January 3, was recorded by the Moravian missionaries [1] The 1835 Cherokee census shows George HIcks with a family of seven living on Conasauga Creek (Tennessee). [2]
The family was Removed to Indian Territory over the Trail of Tears. Jeff married Margaret Lowrey and Nannie Baldridge. The 1851 Drennan roll lists Jefferson, Margaret, and children Nelson and Ruth living in the Saline District. [3] Jeff and Margaret also had a son Charles. [4] Jeff and Nannie were the parents of sons John and George. [5]
Jeff enlisted in the Cherokee Mounted Rifles at the beginning of the Civil War and served as a Captain. [6] He was killed at Bayou Menard, Indian Territory July 27, 1862.
