Robert Hicks served with Civil Service, Virginia during the American Revolution.
Robert Hicks was born in Surry County, Virginia. He married Mary Courtney in Surry County, Virginia c1740[1])
She was the daughter of (?) Courtney, (1710-1752) and Anne Clack Courtney, (1716-1772). She was born in 1718 Brunswick, Virginia, and died in 1770 in Surry County, Virginia in 1766.[2] (Most likely that area in Surry County is now Brunswick, Virginia)
Amy Hicks Culllum, born 07 MAR 1742 in Albemarle, Surry, Virginia.[3]
Charles Hicks b: 1743
Nathan Hicks b: 06 NOV 1743 in Albermarie Parrish, Sussex, Virginia. He is believed by some to have-- at the age of 13-- become a trader, coupled and started a family with with a Cherokee woman named Na Ye Hi Wolf (1743-1770) , of the Cherokee Nation East, Georgia, [4]
Children named/referenced in Robert's 1782 will (in this order):
Nathan
Daughter who married Paul Tatum [some say she was Elinor]
Daughter who married Benjamin Bass [some say she was Martha or Sarah]
Mary Hicks, single as of 1782
Daughter, m James Vaughan
Daughter, m James Bruce
Daughter, m Lewis Peebles
Tabitha Hicks, single in 1782
Research Notes
From a transcription of his will,[5] the following are probably his daughters and sons-in-law:
"...Paul Tatum, Mary Hicks, Tabitha Hicks, James Vaughan, James Bruce and Lewis Peebles, and lastly I constitute and appoint my son-in-law Paul Tatum my whole and sole executor...
son Nathan and son-in-law Benjamin Bass are also named in the will.
Which daughter was married to Tatum, Vaughan, Bruce, Peebles, and Bass is not stated in the will.
The reference to Paul Tatum and Elinor Hicks is as follows:
[Item 2] The Tatum appears as "son-in-law Robert" in 1980 book, Wills and Administrations of Surry County, Virginia, 1671-1750. Appears as "son-in-law" Edward in 1976 book, William Rose of Surry County, Virginia: Page 46 [also in Boddie]. After viewing a transcription of the actually will- it's clear John refers to son-in-law Edward Tataum. In the Will of Nathaniel Tatum, 1714 he mentions his sons: Edward Tatum (d. 1744 m. Martha -will), Peter, Christopher, Henry. His son Edward Tatum m. Martha in his 1744 will children are: Jesse, Edward (Jr.), Cheney, and John (his will witnessed by Robert Hicks, whose daughter Elinor m. Paul Tatum). There is no Robert mentioned in either will and Edward is married to Martha-- so he is not the correct Edward Tatum.[1][7]
The same source lists Robert's children and their spouses[1]
Children of ROBERT HICKS [2] (b. 1720, d. 1782) [lived with John Tatum] and MARY COURTNEY (b. 1718, d. 1770) are

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
James Vaughan who married Susanna Hicks was a son of Binns Vaughan, In the 1806 tax list it has (SB) and i am pretty sure this means James 'Son of Binns'. Now this being said Binns Vaughan was a son of James and this son of Binns was 'overseer' of his grandfathers, James Estate which resulted in a very lengthy chancery case over a 100 acres tract of land.
I agree with the possible wrong marriage date. I believe it was before 1742. Amy their daughter was born in 1742. The 1766 marriage date should be changed.
Where does the 1766 marriage date come from? Makes no sense, especially if they were having children in the 1740s. And if Mary really was born in 1718, it is not likely she started having children in her late 40s (which a 1766 marriage implies).
Also dates of childrens' births are in 1740s, not 1760s/70s)
Bluegrass Messenger says c1740. 1766 appears to have been added in 2018 (see this page). It may be from one of the Ancestry links (I'm not a member, so don't know what those links might hold).

The source is apparently Twigs and branches: Hanna and allied families, compiled and typed by Estelle Bass Cosby (self-published in 1980 per FS/1989 per Google). See
Google Book copy is not searchable & FS just links to WorldCat.
I would recommend changing to c1740. I resolved the issue that got me into the Hicks profiles, so I'm not as involved as I was. The most active Hicks researcher I'm aware of is Patricia Hicks, but I don't think she follows this branch.
P.S. I checked the info I'd collected while researching the two sets of Judith Collier m James Hicks & found nothing to help with the question of their marriage date.
