Biography

Samuel Hicks was born June 30, 1765 in Sutton, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Leland) Hicks. [1]

Samuel Hicks married Lucy Reynolds in 1788. [2] She was born in 1768, the daughter of Jedediah Reynolds.

It appears that Samuel Hicks may have been in Sutton, Massachusetts in 1790. [3] But at some point Samuel and Lucy were in Newport, New Hampshire, where her father Jedediah was a resident. Later, they were in Milton (later Genoa), Cayuga County, New York, where Jedediah died in 1800. [4]

Whether it be true or not, as historically alleged, that the first article of merchandise brought into town was a barrel of rum, it is certain that mercantile life got an early start in town, and that it has flourished all these years. The first store in town was kept by a Mr. Hicks, a son-in-law of Jedediah Reynolds. Josiah Stevens, Jr., also had a store, before the opening of the last century. . [5] [6]
Samuel Hicks, who settled on lot 29, at the forks of the road, where S. Wilson lives. He kept the first store in the east part of the town. He also kept a tavern, and boiled potash about twenty rods west of the four corners. [7]

The Leland Family history lists their children and says Samuel Hicks died in 1828 in Erie County, New York. [8]

The following note for Samuel Hicks was found on rootsweb. It was prepared by Pearl Lillian (Fingerson) Curtis and contributed by her grandson, Derek Curtis: [9]

Samuel Hicks, Jr., son of Samuel and Elizabeth Leland-Hicks was married about 1788 (after serving in the Revolution) to Lucy Runnels (or Reynolds). They probably lived in Sutton, Mass in their early family life as that is where the births of their older children are registered. There their first child was born, Elizabeth-known to our family as Aunt Betsy Tupper-who was born in April 1789. There were four or five others born before 1810 and at least one born after 1810. The family moved to Genoa, Cayuga County New York, about 1798, and lived there until 1811 when they sold their home in Genoa and moved back to Massachusetts-just where has not appeared-and after remaining there for about four years, again moved West to Erie County, New York. It is not known whether Samuel Hicks was married more than once; but it is believed that Lucy Runnels (Reynolds?) was the mother of all his children. An epidemic took three of his children and two of his sisters (1797?), all within a few days, while they were living in Sutton, Mass., and before their removal to Cayuga County, N.Y. This is presumed to have been the stimulating cause for the emigration from Sutton to Genoa. The breaking out of the War of 1812 between the U. S. and England was probably the cause for their moving back to Massachusetts, as western New York was more exposed to the danger of attacks by the enemy, than their old home. Samuel Hicks was living in Clarence, Erie county, N. Y., when the census was taken on August 7, 1820, and was 55 years old. We have no record of his death, nor of that of his wife. It is also impossible to present an accurate list of their children. Following is an approximation: - Elizabeth, born April 5, 1789, in Sutton, Mass., died in October 1878 in Boston, Erie County, N. Y., was married on October 12, 1806, to Aaron Tupper, at Genoa, N. Y.; probably John, born 1791, died Oct. 21 1797 (epidemic); probably Clark, born 1795, died Oct. 14, 1797 (epidemic); probably Samuel, born about 1797; Sarah (Sally), born in Genoa Oct. 1799, died June 12, 1883, at Hamburgh, N. Y., married about 1818 to Daniel Russell who was born about 1798 and died in White Pigeon, Michigan, July 31, 1836; probably a son born about 1801; probably a son born about 1803; Mary (Polly Hicks), born in Genoa, April 9, 1805, who married Sidney Phineas Harrington on June 28, 1832, and died in Kirkland, Illinois, December 20, 1880; possibly another son, Henry born about 1809; and Charles, born after 1810.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
