Biography

Menace McKinley Hicks was born 17 February 1901 in West Virginia the son of Peter Hicks and Nora C. Daniels. (For this information we depend on his death certificate--see details below).

In the 1910 census he was enumerated as "Venus" Hicks, age 9, and was living with his mother Nora Hicks and sister Ethel in the home of his great-grandmother Martha Daniels in Ceredo, West Virginia. The use of the given name Venus was an obvious error because later census and his death certificate prove his correct name should be Menace McKinley Hicks.[1]

Menace Hicks was listed as McKinley Hicks in the 1920 census of Cabell County, West Virginia living in the household of his mother, Nora C. Hicks. [2]

Further information on his life becomes even sketchier. A man by the name of McKinley Hicks was married twice in McDowell County, West Virginia and gave two different names for his parents. Neither of the names matches the parents of Menace McKinley Hicks, however, the age and place of birth are correct. So we are left to wonder if McKinley and Menace are indeed the same man why would he use different incorrect parents when he married?

McKinley Hicks (age 22) married 1 November 1923, Lou Anna Mullins (age 18) at Caretta, McDowell County, West Virginia. He gave his parents names as C.L. and Serelda Hicks. She was the daughter of George and Susie Mullins.[3]

McKinley Hicks (age 24) married 3 November 1925, Bettie Payne (age 25) in Bradshaw, McDowell County, West Virginia. He was the son of John and Jane Hicks. She was the daughter of Burbridge and Rebecca Payne. [4]

The mystery surrounding him deepens in the 1930 census for McDowell County, West Virginia which lists McKinley Hicks living on Three Forks Road with his wife and child. Next door is the household of Jim Hick, age 26, born West Virginia and two doors way is John Hicks, age 70, born West Virginia listed as a "boarder" in the household of Jesse Underwood.[5]

1940 census for McDowell County, West Virginia lists two different households and wives for McKinley Hicks.

In the first household McKinley Hicks (age 37) is living two doors away from Virgil Hicks, age 43, born Kentucky who was living alone. [6]

In the second household McKinley Hicks, age 38, resides with a wife Ida Hicks and is living next door to Paul Mullins (age 34). Lou Anna Mullins was the name of McKinley's first wife. [7]

Always a man of mystery Menace Hicks died 27 February 1949 in Detroit, Michigan.[8] He was buried in Kenova, West Virginia with the simple inscription on his tombstone, "Skinny". [9]
