Isaac Hicks, son of James and Judith (Collier) Hicks.

Captain Isaac Hicks married Ann Booth[1] (Brunswick marriage bond dated 22 April 1782), daughter of Reuben Booth, deceased, and Rebecca.[2][3]

"Will of Isaac Hicks of Brunswick County written May 10, 1817 proven June 23, 1817.
"To daughter Rebecca Booth, slaves Merrick, Charles, Dilcey and her children Gilbert, Phil Nancy and Edmunds, also Hannah, Lucy and Moses with their increase ; also $75.00 to be raised out of my personal estate, which I shall hereafter direct to be sold ;
"to daughter Elizabeth B. Booth, slaves Gabriel, Nat, Milly & her children Lavinia, Nancy, Maria also Suky, Harrison & nelly & their increase;
"to daughter Sally Booth, slaves Jerry, Charles, Ned, Judy 7 her five children, Isham, Patsey, Lizzy, Mary and Selly Call, also Betsey and her child Polly Mitty with their increase, also $200.00 to be raised out of the personal estate, etc:

Proceeds arising from the residue of my estate already disposed of together with the debts & money due me after paying my just debts and after paying my daughter Sally Booth the $200.00 and my daughter Rebecca Booth the $70.00, the balance to be equally divided between my four daughters Rebecca Booth, Elizabeth B Booth, Sally Booth and Minerva Hicks."[6][7]

Research Notes

The Hicks family is an ancient one in Charles City, Prince George and Brunswick Counties, descending from a certain Robert Hicks, who was living in Charles City County, (later Prince George) as early as the last decade of the 17th Century. Robert Hicks (died 1739) of Prince George and later Surry and Brunswick Counties was a prominent Indian trader, and in November 1714, was in command of a group of rangers, and as such was paid for his services. (Surry Records, Order Book 1713-1718, page 43). He is referred to in the record books as captain. His home was on Hick's Ford on the Meherrin River, in Brunswick (now Greenville County). He was father of James Hicks d. 1793 of Brunswick County; he married Judith Collier and had issue: Isaac Hicks b. 1755, died June 20, 1817 of Brunswick County. He served as captain of the third Georgia Battalion, Continental Troops, commanded by Lt. Colonel John McIntosh, and made a prisoner at Briar Creek, March 3, 1779. After the war he returned to Brunswick County, Virginia and continued to reside there un tip his death. He married Nancy Cryer and had issue: Rebecca Hicks b. 1784 d. 1867, married Gilliam Booth, Jr. b. 1781 d. 1821 of Dinwiddie County.

  • Isaac 3 Hicks (James2, Robert1) married Nancy Cryer, was captain of the Third Georgia Regiment, taken prisoner at Brier Creek, March 2, 1779. He was born in 1755, and died, in 1817, in the sixty-third year of his age. (Bible Register.) He had issue, 19 Rebecca, born 13 January, 1784, and died 12 March, 1867. She married Gilliam Booth, Jr. (son of Gilliam Booth), who was born October 26, 1781, and died July 27, 1821, father of the late Mr. Edwin Booth, born 11 May, 1810. (Bible Register.) The latter's son, Dr. E. G. Booth, owns "Carter's Grove, on James River. 20 Reuben Booth had Louisa, who married Gen. William E. Starke, C. S. A., killed at Sharpsburg; 21 Thomas, of Brunswick; 22 Sally, married Benjamin Booth, of Amelia; 23 Sally, married Robert C. Booth, of Dinwiddie; 24 Minerva. (Goode's Virginia Cousins.) I believe the reference that says Judith married James, son of Robert, confused nephew with uncle. From what I can tell, the James who married Judith Collier was son of George.
