Biography
Richard was born in 1860, likely at or near Albany, New York, where his parents were shown in the 1855 New York state census. He is the son of Nicholas Hickson and Catherine Farrell. His parents were from Ireland but they migrated first to the United States and later to Canada.
Richard was shown in the 1871 Canada census at East Toronto, and the 1881 census at Toronto.
He married Emily Lanford Mary Matheson in 1891 at Toronto and they had at least one child. The 1900 U.S. census appers to show him at Manahttan, New York; it says he was born in January 1860 in New York. But the census fails to show his wife, Emily - instead it says “Unknown”.
Richard's sister, Caroline "Carrie," died in 1915 as a passenger on the R.M.S. Lusitania, which was sunk off the coast of Ireland by a German U-boat.
