Balthasar was born on November 16, 1812 in the village of Neudorf in the Glückstal district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia to Balthasar Hieb and Margaretha (Unknown) Hieb. He was the fifth of his father's 8 children and the second of his mother's 5 children.[1][2][3]


On February 21, 1837, at the age of 24, Balthasar married Carolina Ohlauser in the village of Freudental in the Grossliebental district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia. [4]

  6. Friederike (1848-1910): Married Valentin Leer, 9 children.
  7. Margaretha (1850-1918): Married Friedrich Sattler, 11 children.
  8. Michael (1853-1853): Died as an infant.
  9. Sophia (1854-1903): Married Jacob Bittner, 8 children.
  10. Christian (1856-1929): Married Katharina Gross, 10 children.


On May 13, 1874, at the age of 61, Balthasar, his wife, and 2 children arrived in Baltimore, MD aboard the S.S. Hermann traveling from Bremen, Germany. [5]


On March 1, 1885, at the age of 72, Balthasar passed away in Tripp, SD. He is buried in Lower Emanuel Reformed Cemetery in Tyndall, SD.[3]
