Margaretha was born in 1817 in the village of Neudorf in the Glückstal district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia to Johann Adam Hieb (Jr.) and Magdalena (Kirschenmann) Hieb. She was the first of her father's 15 children and the first of her mother's 7 children.
