Biography
Henry Hiestand was born about 1780 in Virginia; he was possibly the son of Abraham Hiestand and Magdalene Boehm. [citation needed] [See Research Notes below regarding his parents, date & location of birth, and spelling of surname.]
On 26 Nov 1802 in Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky, United States,[1][2][3][4] Henry Hiestand married Elizabeth Sprowl.
In 1810,[5] Henry Hastings was living in Burksville, Cumberland County, Kentucky as head of household, which included (age range) [possible names]: a) males - 3 (< 10), 1 (16 - 25) [Henry Hiestand]; b) females - 1 (< 10), 1 (16 - 25) [Elizabeth (Sprowl) Hiestand]. There were 4 children under the age of 10 living with them, which is consistent with Henry & Elizabeth marrying in 1802.
In 1820,[6] Henry Hastand [sic] was living in Monroe County, Kentucky as head of household, which included (age range): a) males - 1 (<10), 3 (10 - 15), 1 (26 - 44) [Henry Hiestand]; b) females - 3 (< 10), 1 (16 - 25), 1 (26 - 44) [Elizabeth (Sprowl) Hiestand]; c) male slaves - 2 (26 - 44). There are 8 children under the age of 15 living with them, which is consistent with Henry & Elizabeth marrying in 1802.
In 1830,[7] Henry Hastin [sic] was living in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky as head of household, which included (age range): a) males - 1 (5 - 9), 1 (10 - 14), 1 (15 - 19), 1 (20 - 29), 1 (50 - 59) [Henry Hiestand]; b) females - 1 (< 5), 2 (5 - 9), 1 (10 - 14), 1 (15 - 19), 1 (40 - 49) [Elizabeth (Sprowl) Hiestand].
In 1840,[8] Henry Hestand, Sr. was in living Monroe County, Kentucky, United States as head of household, which included (age range): a) males - 1 (< 5), 1 (15 - 19), 1 (50 - 59) [Henry Hiestand]; b) females - 1 (10 -14), 1 (15 - 19), 1 (20 - 29), 1 (50 - 59) [Elizabeth (Sprowl) Hiestand]. Of note, on the same census enumeration sheet,[8] the immediately following enumeration was for Henry Hestand, Jr., who was probably the son of Henry Hestand, Sr.

- parents - although most genealogical websites (e.g., FamilySearch, Ancestry, etc.) list Henry Hiestand as the son of Abraham Hiestand and Magdalene Boehm (and grandson of Henrich Hiestand), currently there are no primary sources to confirm this claim. There are other Hiestand ancestors (likely related to Henrich Hiestand) who could be his parents. Hence, some healthy skepticism regarding his parents is reasonable. - birth - there are currently no primary sources that record Henry's date of birth or even year of birth. Assuming that he was indeed the son of Abraham Hiestand, and depending upon the year of his birth, then he was likely born either in Shenandoah County (currently Page County), Virginia or Washington County, Tennessee. Using the census records listed above, his birth year can be estimated to be about 1780, as follows:

Assuming that the 1810 census enumeration[5] really was for the Henry Hiestand of this WikiTree profile, then my guess is that he was was at least 25 years old then, and probably closer to 30 years old. This is because he was married in 1802, and most men didn't marry in that era until they had some assets (e.g., land), which Henry wouldn't have had if he was only 16 or 17 in 1802. In the 1820 census,[6] (again assuming that it really was for the Henry Hiestand of this WikiTree profile), then his age was probably between 35 - 44, and a reasonable estimate would be about 40 years old, especially considering the 1830 census. Clearly, the 1830 & 1840 censuses can't both be accurate. My guess is that he was probably just shy of 50 years old in 1830 and about 59/60 years old in 1840. If this guess is accurate, then he would have been born about 1780 - 1781 in Shenandoah County (currently Page County), Virginia, U.S.A., as this is where his putative father, Abraham Hiestand, Sr. was then living. - spelling of surname - Henry's surname was properly "Hiestand" (or "Hiestandt" using the German spelling), which is how his putative immigrant grandfather, Henrich Hiestand, spelled their surname. Indeed, some of Henrich's descendants to this day (including yours truly) still spell their surname as such. However, there are many known spelling variants including, but not limited to: Heistand, Hestand, Histand, Heston, Haston, Hastings, etc. etc. Hiestand-529 23:55, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- death - there are no currently available primary sources that record his death date or location; however a number of genealogical websites list a death date of 1841 (without source citation). As such, for his profile, I have simply listed his death date as after 1840, which is the last putative record (i.e., the 1840 federal census[8]) of when he was alive.
