Biography

Isaac Haston was born about 1796 in Tennessee;[1] he was the son of Daniel Hiestand and Christina Nave. [See Research Notes below regarding the spelling of his surname at birth and his date of birth.]

About Jun 1813 in Tennessee,[2] Isaac Hasting (age 18) married Agnes Simpson (age 14).

About 1835,[6] Isaac Hastings moved his family from McMinn County, Tennessee to Cass Township, Greene County, Missouri, ". . . settling about a mile east of Cave Spring".

On 27 Aug 1866 in Sonoma County, California,[9] Isaac Hastin (age 68, born Tennessee) (along with his Hastin sons: i) Hartwell Green (age 24, born Missouri), ii) Jesse Axley (age 29, born Missouri), & iii) Ashbury Roten (age 30, born Tennessee) registered to vote. They were all employed as farmers in Santa Rosa Township.

1870 Census - see Research Notes below

On 23 Aug 1870 in Bennett Valley, Sonoma County, California,[10] Isaac Hastings signed his Last Will. In his will, he listed the following individuals, their relationship to him, and bequeathals:

  1. Hartwell G. Hastings - son, residing in California; Executor of estate, all real estate owned by Isaac; various other items and farm animals
  2. Lucida Agness Hastings - granddaughter (daughter of Hartwell G. Hastings); various personal property including farm animals
  3. Agnes Hastings - wife; her support to be provided by Hartwell G. Hastings for the rest of her life
  4. John Westley Hastings - son, living in Texas
  5. Samuel Douthard Hastings - son, living in Missouri
  6. Emily Hastings - daughter, wife of Joseph Hasting
  7. De Say Fletcher Hastings - son
  8. A. R. Hastings - son
  9. Jesse Axley Hastings - son

In the will, Isaac explicitly states that the reason that he is leaving all his real estate to Hartwell and none to his other children is that Hartwell stayed with him in California.

Isaac Hastings died in 1872 in Sonoma County, California, and he was buried in the Bennett Valley Cemetery, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA. [11]

Probate of Last Will

On 30 Mar 1872 in Sonoma County, California,[10] the last will of Isaac Hastings (deceased) was presented in the Sonoma County Court for probate; and on 6 May 1872 the subscribing witnesses to the signing of the will all testified that it was indeed the last will of the deceased. The judge so ordered that it be recorded and probate initiated. Based on the filing of Isaac's Last Will on 30 Mar 1872, then he died prior to that date, and likely sometime in March 1872.

Research Notes

  • spelling of surname at birth - Isaac's immigrant grandfather, Henrich Hiestand, spelled the family surname as "Hiestand" (or "Hiestandt" using the German spelling). Isaac's father, Daniel Hiestand/Haston, changed the spelling of their surname from Hiestand to Haston circa the time that Daniel moved his family to Tennessee, where Isaac was born. As such, at the time Isaac was born, then his surname was arguably "Haston" rather than "Hiestand". Later in Isaac's life, he appears to changed or adopted the spelling of his surname as "Hastings". Hiestand-529 22:18, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
  • date of birth - there are currently no primary sources that confirm Isaac's date of birth. The 1850[1] and 1860[8] federal censuses both indicate that he was born about 1796 in Tennessee. Hiestand-529 22:18, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
  • 1870 Census - unable to identify an 1870 federal census enumeration for Isaac Hastings (including variant spellings of his surname), even though it is clear that he continued to live in Santa Rosa Township, Sonoma County, California. Hiestand-529 17:52, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
  • Note N14759 Note: Jessie Prichard, great granddaughter of Isaac, (in her DAR application process) wrote: "Isaac Hasting -- Born October 17, 1794 in McMinn Co, TN; Agnes Hasting -- Born December 28, 1797 in McMinn Co, TN." Some Haston researchers have questioned the accuracy of McMinn County as the place of Isaac's birth. The time of his birth would seem to best fit a Knox County place of birth. The first documented record of Daniel Haston's appearance in Knox County, TN, where he lived until moving to White Co in middle TN in about 1804, was in mid-1795. What is now McMinn County is only about 25 miles south of what is now Knox County, so it is geographically & chronologically possible that Isaac could have been born in (what is now) McMinn Co, then Daniel could have moved his family north to the Knoxville area by 1795. However, what is now McMinn Co was Indian land until it was formed from Indian land in 1819, so is not very likely that Daniel's family lived there in the 1790s. From evidence cited below, it is evident that Isaac enlisted for service in the War of 1812 in Sparta (White County, TN) and an Isaac Hasting of the right age does appear on the 1820 census for White County. Thus, it is likely that he and Agnes lived in White County (Isaac having moved from Knox County to White County with his family in 1804 or so) and then moved to the McMinn - Monroe counties area of East TN in the 1820s (where some of their children were born) and then westward to Missouri in the 1830s. We suspect that the McMinn County, TN place of birth for Isaac and Agnes was projected from the fact that they lived there in the 1820s. Note: Citation and reference needed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isaac by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isaac:
