Biography

Barbara Hiestand was born on 31 May 1820;[1] she was the daughter of Joseph Hiestand and Catherine Funkhouser. [See Research Notes below regarding the identity of her parents.]

On 25 Oct 1844 in Fairfield County, Ohio,[2] Barbara Hiestand married Jacob Bish.

On 1 Jun 1850,[3] Barbarah Bish (age 30) was living in Blanchard Township, Hancock County, Ohio in the household of her husband, Jacob Bish, with their children (listed in table below).

Barbara Bish died (age 69) on 21 Jun 1889 in German Township, Fulton County, Ohio.[7] She was married at the time of her death. She was born in Ohio. The cause of death was consumption. [See Research Notes below regarding her date of death.]

Barbara Bish died on 14 Jun 1889, and she was buried in the Floral Grove Cemetery, West Unity, Williams County, Ohio.[1] Her headstone is inscribed as follows:

Based on the above inscription[1] and calculating backwards, then she was born on: 31 May 1820. [See Research Notes below regarding her date of death.]

Research Notes

  • parents identity - it is highly likely that Barbara's parents were Joseph Hiestand and Catherine Funkhouser. The primary source that supports (but does not prove) this is the 1860 federal census,[4] which included in Jacob & Barbara Bish's household Miss Elizabeth Hiestand (age 37, single, born Ohio), who would have been Barbara's younger sister.   • date of death - primary sources disagree on the date of Barbara's death, as follows: i) Fulton County Death Records (21 Jun 1889)[7]; ii) headstone inscription (14 Jun 1889)[1].   • information about Barbara Bish in "History of Gratiot County, Michigan" - in this book,[8] Barbara Bish is mentioned in the context of one of her daughters, Miss Amanda Bish, who married in 1881 Mr. Lyman W. Fiddler. According to the book, Barbara (Heistand) Bish was born on 3 May 1921 in Fairfield County, Ohio and she died on 14 Jun 1890. However, there are primary sources that record her death as 14 Jun 1889[1] or 21 Jun 1889[7]. This raises questions about the about accuracy of the author's stated date of Barbara's birth (which does not include any primary sources). Indeed, most of the federal census records (1850, 1860, & 1880) are consistent with a birth date of 1820 between Jan - May. Hiestand-529 21:56, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
