Biography

Barton Greenup Hestand was born August 30, 1838, in Monroe county, Kentucky, a son of Philip Hiestand and Margaret Greenup. In 1850, Barton is found at the age of eleven, living in the household of Philip and Margaret "Hastend" with nine siblings. [1] Barton "Hestand" is found on the United States census of 1860, at the age of 21, still living with his parents Philip and Margaret "Hesland." [2]

On September 12, 1860, in Monroe county, Kentucky, Barton married Mary Adeline Frailey. Mary was born September 20, 1842, in Monroe county, Kentucky, a daughter of Isaac Frailey and Caroline Kendrick. [3]

Barton and Mary are found on the 1870 Census of Monroe county, Kentucky with four children, ages newborn to six and 17 year old male, Grace Stewart Hestand, born 1853 (perhaps a younger brother?) [4] Barton is found on the 1880 census as "Barton Hestond." He and Mary have seven daughters, and two sons. His mother-in-law, "Carline Trailey" [Caroline (Kendrick) Frailey] age 66, born in Mississippi, is living in the household with them. [5] Barton and Mary "Hestand" are found on the United States Census of 1900, living in East Tompkinsville, Monroe county, Kentucky. [6]

Barton G. Hestand passed away June 18, 1914, in Monroe county, Kentucky [7] and is buried in the Bailey Cemetery, in Tompkinsville. [8]
