Biography

Caution: there are a number of Samuel Hiestand/Heistend/Heasten/Heaston's living in & around Ohio & Illinois around the same time with about the same age. Be careful not to conflate their records.

Samuel Heisten was born about 1843; he was the son of Aaron Hiestand and Mary Cloud. [1]

In 1850,[1] Samuel Heaston [sic] age 7, born Ohio) was living in Liberty Township, Fairfield County, Ohio in the household of his father, Aaron Heaston [sic] (age 31, born Ohio), with his mother, Maria Heaston [sic] (age 30, born Ohio), and with his Heaston [sic] siblings, born Ohio (age, sex): i) Isabella (16, F), ii) Catherine (14, F), iv) Lewis (4, M), v) Jesse (2, M). Aaron's occupation was a farmer. Of note, on the same census enumeration sheet,[1] the family immediately preceding Aaron's was that of his widowed mother, Catherine Heaston, with his Heaston brothers & sisters.

- possible 1860 census record - see Research Notes below

On 15 Sep 1861 in Columbus, Ohio during the U. S. Civil War,[2] Samuel C. Heaston enlisted in Company B, 46th Ohio Infantry Volunteers. He was discharged in 1864 while in Bridgeport, Alabama; and he immediately re-enlisted in the same Company. He continued service until 1 Jul 1865 in Springfield, Illinois, when he was discharged due to prior wounds received during battle. He was shot ("G.S.W." = gun shot wound) in the superior maxillary bone, injuring the left orbit of eye on 3 Jun 1864 while he was near the New Hope Church in Georgia.

In Jun/Jul 1863 in Madison Township, Franklin County, Ohio,[3] Samuel Heaston (age 20) registered for the Civil War Draft. Samuel was born in Ohio, single, a farmer by occupation, and he had previously served in the 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Subsequent to his 1865 discharge from the military,[2] Samuel Heaston began residing in McHenry County, Illinois where he was engaged in farming.

- 1865 possible Illinois State census record - see Research Notes below

- 1868 possible marriage - see Research Notes below

On 24 Oct 1879,[2] Samuel C. Heaston (age 36) was admitted to the Dayton, Ohio U. S. Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, where he resided until 6 Oct 1887 and was discharged upon his request. Samuel was born in Fairfield County, Ohio; he was single and his nearest relative was his brother, Lewis Heaston, who resided in Pleasantville, Fairfield County, Ohio. Samuel was receiving a military pension of $12/month at the time of admission, and the pension was increased to $30/month on 21 May 1884. [See Research Notes below regarding this record.]

Samuel Heiston (age 58) died on 31 Oct 1903 in Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.[4] The cause of death was shock due to an operation on an enlarged prostate. Samuel was born about 1845; his parents were Aaron & Mary Heiston. Samuel's occupation had been a farmer; he was widowed at the time of his death. Samuel had been a resident of Columbus for the 8 months prior to his death. He was buried on 2 Nov 2903 in Pleasantville, Ohio.

Research Notes

  • admission to Dayton, Ohio Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers - this single record provides a lot of information about Samuel Heaston and it suggests (but it is not confirmatory) that it is the Samuel Heaston of this WikiTree profile. There are 2 key facts that are the strongest evidence, as follows: i) his birth year & Location (1843 in Fairfield County, Ohio); and ii) his closest relative (Lewis Heaston in Pleasantville, Fairfield County, Ohio). Hiestand-529 14:33, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
  • possible 1860 federal census - In 1860,[5] a Samuel Heaston (age 16, born Ohio) was living in Madison Township, Franklin County, Ohio along with 4 other single adults in the residence of a farmer, William D. Needels (age 61), with William's wife, Mary Needels (age 58), and son, Melvin S. Needels. Samuel's occupation was a laborer.
  • possible Illinois State census - On 3 Jul 1865,[6] a Saml Heisten [sic] was living in Coral, McHenry County, Illinois as head of household, which included (age range): a) males - 1 (<10), 1 (30 - 40); b) females - 1 (30 - 40). It is unclear whether this the record of the Samuel Heaston of this WikiTree profile. There are some tantalizing aspects which include that it is for a Samuel Heisten living in McHenry County, Illinois where Samuel later reported in 1879 he had been living after the Civil War. However, this record suggests that he was then married and had a young son, and that both he & his wife were aged between 30 - 40, which is inconsistent with his being born about 1843. Hiestand-529 14:33, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
  • possible marriage - On 13 Apr 1868 in Franklin County, Ohio,[7] Samuel C. Heistan (age over 21) married Mary E. Ward (age 17), a resident of Franklin County, Ohio. Mary's mother (unnamed on marriage license) gave consent to the marriage as Mary was less than 18 years old. The obvious question is whether this is the same Samuel Heistan of the current WikiTree profile. Hiestand-529 14:33, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
