His farm consisted of 160 acres, of which 18 acres were cultivated. The cash value was assessed at $800. His livestock included: horses (4), milch cow (2), other cattle (1), sheep (0), swine (13) - all valued at $140. The cultivated crops included (bushels): wheat (15), rye (0), Indian corn (65), oats (0).

Elizabeth Foltz, wife of Tobias Hiestand, gave birth to a son, Michael Otterbein Hiestand. Michael's middle name, Otterbein, was undoubtedly given in recognition of [William Otterbein], the founder and 1st Bishop of the United Brethren in Christ. This was church to which Tobias, his father, Rev. Samuel Hiestand (the 9th Bishop of the UBC), and his uncle, Abraham Hiestand, (and other Hiestands) were all members and deeply involved.

Tobias Hiestand (age 65, born Ohio) was living in Allen Township, Darke County, Ohio as head of household with his 2nd wife, Louisa P. Hiestand (age 49, born Maryland), with 2 Hiestand children from his 1st marriage: i) Phillip (age 22, born Ohio), ii) Michael (18, born Ohio), and with a stepson from his 2nd marriage: iii) Jacob W. Long (age 21, born Ohio). Tobias' occupation was a farmer. Of note, on the same census enumeration sheet,[16], are the listings for the families of a number of Tobias's relatives including his brothers, Samuel, Joseph, & Jonas Hiestand, his son, Tobias Hiestand, Jr., and a nephew, Peter Hiestand.
In 1888,[17]
Tobias Hiestand, Sr. owned land in Allen Township, Darke County, Ohio that abutted land of a number of his Hiestand brothers and other kin. Of note, the land owned by Tobias Hiestand, Sr. appears to be land he obtained via his father-in-law, Balthes Fultz, who had obtained on 10 Oct 1840 a land patent for 160 acres in Darke County, Ohio (i.e., Township 14N, Range 2E, Section 21, Aliquot SW¼).

Tobias Hiestand died on 6 Dec 1888 at his home in Allen Township, Darke County, Ohio,[19] and he was buried in the Webster Cemetery, Rossburg, Darke County, Ohio.[1]

spelling of surname - Tobias' surname was "Hiestand", but the spelling of the Hiestand surname has had many variants over time and locale including, but not limited to, the following: Heistand, Heistan, Heiston, Heistant. Histan, Heastan, Heaston, etc. etc. In this genealogical biography, his surname is spelled as it was recorded in the primary source document, and otherwise as "Hiestand".
