Biography

Thomas was born about 1893. In the 1900 census Thomas (age 9) was the son of Lewis A Higdon in Election District 8, Bryantown, Charles County, Maryland, United States.[1]

Thomas served in the United States Navy. He enlisted on 11 January 1916.[2] He reenlisted on 1 December 1918 and was discharged on 10 January 1920. He attained the rank of Carpenter's Mate 1st Class.[3]

Thomas appears in two 1920 census records. On 7 January 1920 Thomas is a petty officer (P.O.) with the USS Bridgeport in New York, New York. He is married and has the address 2209 Channing.[4] He was discharged from the Navy on 10 January 1920. On 17 January 1920 he is a house carpenter living (age 27) with his first wife Fannie and children and his parents and siblings at 2209 Channing in Langdon, Washington, D.C.[5]

Thomas was granted divorce from Fannie in Maryland, probably in 1920–1922. The charge was desertion.[6]

Thomas (age 30) married Catherine E Maguire (age 35) on 4 October 1922 in Alexandria, Virginia.[7] Fannie sued for absolute divorce from William T. Higdon on 23 March 1923 in Washington, D.C. The charge was infidelity and a co-respondent was named (surely this was his second wife Catherine). Fannie stated that her husband prevented her from visiting their two children.[8] She petitioned for custody of their children Samuel (age 12) and William (age 9). She contested the divorce granted to Mr. Higdon in Maryland, claiming it was illegal and she was therefore Mr. Higdon's legal wife. Her petition was denied by Chief Justice McCoy, who did not strike down the Maryland divorce. Mr. Higdon's attorney J. S. Detwiler showed that Mr. Higdon had taken care of the children since an alleged desertion by Mrs. Higdon six years prior.[6]

In the 1930 census Thomas (age 38) was the married head of household in Clinton, Prince George's, Maryland, United States.[9] In the 1940 census Thomas (age 47) was the married head of household in District 9, Prince George's, Maryland, United States.[10] Thomas registered for the draft in 1942 in Clinton, Prince George's, Maryland. He lived on Possum Pike and was self-employed.[11] In the 1950 census Thomas (age 58), Farmer, was the married head of household in District 1, Charles, Maryland, United States.[12]

Thomas died on 25 November 1955 in Clinton, Prince George's County, Maryland, United States.[13][14] He was buried on 29 November 1955 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, United States.[2][15][16]
