Biography

Joseph Higdon was born on 18 Jul 1759, in Charles County in the Province of Maryland.[1] He was the son of John William Higdon and Mary Magdalene Montgomery.[2] Before 1776, his family had relocated north, to the Lower Potomack Hundred in Frederick County, Province of Maryland.[3]

Military Service: The American Revolution

When Joseph volunteered for service in the army on 10 Jun 1781,[4] he was living in Montgomery County, Maryland.[5] He enlisted as a private in Captain William's Maryland Company, participating in the siege of Yorktown, which began in September of 1781. He was present for Lord Cornwallis's surrender on 19 Oct 1781.[6]

Upon expiration of his first enlistment, he volunteered again on 30 Oct 1781, this time enlisting for three years as a private in a cavalry troop under Captain Le Brumde Bellecour (or LeBrun Bellecoux).[7] In June of 1782, he was promoted to Corporal. He was discharged from the First Partizan Legion, under the command of Brigadier General Armand, Marquis de la Rouerie, on 15 Nov 1783.[8]

Civilian Life: Marriage & Family, North Carolina

In 1784, he moved to Rowan County, North Carolina, There he married Margaret (Enoch) Holbrook (b. 17 Feb 1766),[9] the widow of William Holbrook, on 5 Apr 1786,[10] taking her young son, William Holbrook III (b. 11 Mar 1784),[11] into their household.[12] In the following years, Joseph and Margaret had 13 children of their own:[13]

  1. Gabriel E. Higdon (b. 5 Feb 1787, Rowan County, North Carolina)[14][15]
  2. John M. Higdon (b. 8 Aug 1788, Rowan County, North Carolina)[16]
  3. Mary "Polly" Higdon (12 Feb 1790, Rowan County, North Carolina)[17]
  4. Susannah Higdon (b. 11 Oct 1791, Rowan County, North Carolina)[18][19]
  5. Jane Higdon (b. 30 Aug 1793, Rowan County, North Carolina)[20]
  6. Hays Higdon (b. 22 Jun 1795, Rowan County, North Carolina)[21]
  7. Rebecca S. Higdon (b. 17 Mar 1797, Tennessee)[22]
  8. Ishmael Higdon (b. 10 Dec 1798, Wilson County, Tennessee)[23]
  9. John Joseph Higdon (b. 10 Oct 1800)[24][25]
  10. Margaret Higdon (b. 23 Sep 1802, Barren County, Kentucky)[26]
  11. Thomas Higdon (b. 4 Aug 1804, Barren County, Kentucky)[27]
  12. Enoch E. Higdon (b. 5 May 1806, Barren County, Kentucky)[28]
  13. Sarah "Sally" Higdon (b. 13 Mar 1810, Barren County, Kentucky)[29][30][31]

On March 28, 1787, Joseph bought 250 acres of land on Carters Creek from William and Susannah Holbrook, Margaret's first husband's parents.[32]

Tennessee & Kentucky

Within a few years, he sold 100 acres of the land to Nathan Sapp of Rowan County,[33][34] possibly on 16 Apr 1791. He may have later sold the remainder of the land to Nathan Sapp, before relocating his family to Tennessee,[35] while Margaret accepted five shillings in exchange for her interest in the estate of her late first husband, William Holbrook.[36] The move to Tennessee may have occurred in 1796 or early 1797, as his daughter Rebecca has been said to have been born there in March of 1797.[37]

In late 1801, Joseph moved his family again, this time to Barren County, Kentucky,[38] where he settled on Fallen Timber Creek, a branch of Skegg's Creek, as one of the earliest settlers there.[39] He remained in Barren County for the rest of his life.

In 1803, he was one of those ordered by the Barren County Court to inventory the esate of the deceased Thomas Loyd.[40][41]

Joseph applied for a pension for his service in the Revolution on 16 Oct 1832. He stated that after he was out of the service, he did not think the discharge papers were of any further use to him and that he had given the papers to his little son to play with, and what he did with them he did not know. On his application, he signed his own name, but the extent of his literacy is unknown. His pension was granted, effective 4 Mar 1831.[42]

Joseph Higdon died in Barren County, Kentucky on February 6, 1836.[43]

After his death, Margaret remained in Barren County, Kentucky. She applied for and received a widow's pension for Joseph's military service, beginning on 4 Mar 1831.[44] On 12 Apr 1839, her son Joseph, Jr., helped her re-apply for her widow's pension, traveling the 12 miles to appear in court on her behalf. She made her mark of an X on the application. Her new application was granted and the new certificate issued on 29 Feb 1840.[45]

Probate

Joseph signed (with his mark) his Last Will and Testament on 2 Oct 1835, in Barren County, Kentucky. His witnesses were James Frazier and Isaac Smith (possibly a relation of the Isaac Smith whose estate Joseph had helped inventory on 6 May 1811). It was proved there after his death on 6 Feb 1836. His executors were Ishmael Higdon (probably his son) and James Smith, his witnesses James Frazier and Isaac Smith.[46]

Research Notes

Given Name: Joseph or John?

When adopted, this profile had "John" as the given name and "Joseph" as the middle name, although the source material cited or extracted belonged to Joseph Higdon (b. 1759). The Maryland records cited above (showing Joseph's discharge from the First Partizan Legion, commanded by Brigadier General Armand, Marquis de la Rouerie, on 15 Nov 1783, included two listings, one for Joseph (enlisted 1781) and one for John Higdon, who enlisted a year later.[47] This John Higdon may have been Joseph's older brother, but this would require further research to establish a timeline for that John Higdon, who does not currently have a separate profile. Pending documentation that Joseph's first name at birth was John, the data field has been changed to show Joseph and marked "uncertain." Anderson-27719 01:31, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
