Biography

Arena A. Higginbotham was the daughter of George E. Higginbotham and Mary "Polly" Moody.[1] She was born in Mississippi around March 1839.[2] On 6 August 1855 she married James A. McCallum in Marshall County, Mississippi.[3] Arena and James had two recorded children based on the 1860[4] and 1870[5] Federal censuses, but probably has as many as four children. In 1860, Arena could be found in Caddo, Clarke County, Arkansas. By 9 April 1869, she had relocated to Marshall County, Mississippi and married Benjamin Gandy,[6] apparently following James's death. Arena and Benjamin had five children based on 1880[7] and 1900[2] Federal census data and confirmation of her descendants. By 1900, Arena had relocated to Township 6, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory in Mississippi living with her daughter, Ira I, and son-in-law, Martin L. Homon.[2] She later relocates to Beat 1, Lawrence Mississippi by 1910 living with her daughter, Minnie, and son-law, William B. Harris.[8] In 1920 she can be found living in the Sherman, Texas Home for the Poor, living near her daughter, Lena Brooks, and her son-in-law, Andrew J. Brooks.[9] Arena passed away in Sherman, Texas on 3 May 1924.[10] She is buried at County Farm Cemetery located near Sherman, Texas.[11]

Arena indicates in the 1900 Federal Census that she had nine children and that four are living at the time of the census[2]

Children of Arena Higginbotham and James A. McCallum

  1. Mary McCallum (1857-????) alive in 1870 may have married B. P. Harris in 1874, no further information found
  2. Charles P. McCallum (1859-????) alive in 1870

Rumors

  • According to my Grandma Kammerdiener, Arena was enough Indian that she could have gotten free land in the Indian Territory. Her husband would not allow her to do so because admitting you were Indian at that time was quite shameful.[13]
Note:
  1. Research on the family does not support this rumor, although her child Ina was living on a reservation in 1900.
  2. Recent au DNA testing of two descendants does not support this rumor, nor does mtDNA testing of one of those two tested. Most likely the au testing would not have been definitive, but the mtDNA should have provided some hints since Arena was in this descendant's maternal line.
