Thankful Atwood Higgins was born at her parents' home in Wellfleet, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA, on 1 September 1829. She was the daughter of local farmer, Enoch Higgins (1798-1866) and his wife, Elizabeth Elvira (Hopkins) Higgins (1798-1850). She was a descendant of Stephen Hopkins, a Mayflower passenger in 1620 to Plymouth Colony, New England.[1] [2]
On April 20, 1849, most-likely in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, she married Nathaniel L. Snow (1827-1899). At first the couple lived next to her parents' home in Wellfleet, where their first child was born. They were recorded there as 23 and 21 years old on the 1850 US Census. Nathaniel Snow was recorded as a "Carpenter". The Census enumerator actually counted her twice: once as Mrs. Snow, and a 2nd time as Miss Higgins. [3]
In the 1850s, the couple moved to Chelsea (East Boston), Suffolk County, Massachusetts. They had 5 children and returned to Wellfleet in the 1860s:[4]
Nathaniel and Thankful (Higgins) Snow were listed as living in Wellfleet, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on the 1850 and 1880 US Federal Census reports. His occupation was "carpenter" in 1850 and "ship carpenter" in 1880. In 1884 it is said that the family moved to Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.[5]
The 1890 Census was accidentally destroyed. Nathaniel Snow passed away on 2 September 1899, nine months before the 1900 US Census. His Rhode Island death certificate states he was 72 years, 3 months & 13 days old at time of death. He is said to have died from "Old Age". Nathaniel & his wife, Thankful (Higgins) Snow, lived on East Street in Providence Ward 1, Providence County, Rhode Island, next to their son, William Francis Snow (1857-1914). [6]
Thankful (Higgins) Snow is listed as a widow on the 1900 Census in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, age 71, living in the home of her son, George Fabyan Snow, and his wife, Ida (Miller) Snow. Thankful died there on September 24, 1906 at 77 years old.[7] No burial memorial has been found for either of them on Find A Grave; it's presumed they were buried in Rumford Cemetery, East Providence, Rhode Island, USA, where others of the family are interred.
