Biography

This profile is part of the Higgins Name Study.

Lillian and Owen Higgins were the children of Ida Higgins and Milton Higgins. They were not yet born for the 1900 Census. In 1902, the entire family came down with Typhoid, I believe, though it could have been something different. I believe that all 3 were buried at Wates cemetery in Lauderdale county, Alabama. They both would have been very small, the younger only an infant. I think it possible they were buried together, in one coffin, but I don't know that to be a fact. I have searched for epidemics in Lauderdale county at that time and found nothing. Milton, Owen and Lillian all died of the disease. Ida was so sick that she could not attend the services for her husband and children, and, in fact, was not aware of their deaths until 2 weeks later. I believe that Owen was the oldest, but can't be certain. This was told to me by Ida's daughters, Eunice and Mildred, who were my aunt (Eunice) and grandmother (Mildred).-Laura Martin

Update - 09/29/2022 - The obituary above is for a Lillian Higgins who passed away in Philadelphia, PA, not Lauderdale County, AL. According to the biography, she was a small child when she passed away of typhoid fever. The writer believes that the two small children (her brother was an infant) was placed in their father's coffin.

I searched but did not find any sources. I did find the father on Find a Grave. I suggest documenting your family knowledge as the source. You can do this as either "Personal Knowledge" or from an "Interview" of a family member. Then remove the unsourced tag from the profile.
