Biography

Jane Ellen "Jennie" Higgins was born 15 July 1858 in Canada to Bartholemew Higgins and Susan Swales^{[1][2][3][4][5]}. At the time of her birth, her parents were ages 58 and 46, respectively.

Jennie married Samuel Hughes Lloyd 27 Feb 1878 in Kincardine, Bruce, Ontario, Canada^[4][2]. At the time of their marriage, Samuel's religious denomination was listed as Society of Friends, and Jennie's as Church of England.^[4] A few years later, she is identified as a Methodist, as was her husband and the family of her in-laws, who lived next door.^[1]

Jennie and Samuel's first two children were born in Canada^[6][7]. In 1882 or 1883, Jennie traveled to the United States^[2][3]. Her four younger children were all born in Michigan.^{[8][9][6][10][11][12][13]}

The 1881 Canadian Census documents Jennie and her family (surname phonetically spelled Loid), then consisting of herself, her husband. Samuel, and their 3-year-old son, John B., as living in Howick, Huron North, Ontario, Canada. It states that she was born in Ontario, was 24 years of age (birth year 1856), and was a Methodist.^[1]

The 1900 US Census lists Jennie and her family as living in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan. Jenny is documented as having given birth to six children, six of whom were living. In the household were Samuel H. Lloyd, head; Jane, wife; Barker, son; Mary A., daughter; Dora E., daughter; Elmer, son; Ellis H., son; and Lillian, daughter.^[2]

The 1910 US Census also shows the family living in Sault St Marie, Chippewa, Michigan (surname spelled Loyd). Jenny is documented as having given birth to six children, five of whom were still living. Note: Dora Estelle died in 1909. In the household were Samuel H., head; Jane (Jenny), wife; Elmer B., son; Ellis H., son; Lillian S., daughter; J. Barker, son; Mary E., daughter-in-law; Elmer W., grandson; and Kenneth B., grandson.^[3]

Jennie is believed to have died in 1917, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, age 58.^[14]
