Edward was born in Iowa, one of five children; he grew up and worked on the family farm. He married Nellie Cory in 1904. In 1910, they emigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada where they homesteaded near Luceland, where both is brother Charles and sister Eliza and their families had settled.
Edward and his family returned to Iowa in about 1917.
